PA-DSS is the Council-managed program formerly managed by Visa Inc. and known as the Payment Application Best Practices (PABP). The goal of PA-DSS is to help software vendors and others develop secure payment applications that do not store prohibited data, such as full magnetic stripe, other sensitive authentication data or PIN data, and ensure their payment applications support compliance with the PCI DSS. PA-DSS requirements apply to payment applications that are sold, distributed or licensed to third parties. PA-DSS requirements do not apply to in-house payment applications developed by merchants or service providers that are not sold to a third party, but these applications must still be secured in accordance with the PCI DSS. “The issuance of the PA-DSS and a defined process for PA-QSAs is another key milestone for the Council,” said Bob Russo, General Manager, PCI Security Standards Council. “Having a single source of information on approved payment applications and security assessors provides business value to merchants and service providers and allows them to make informed choices regarding the security of their payment application.” The Council said it will be qualifying companies to become Payment Application Qualified Security Assessors (PA-QSAs). Companies that are approved as PA-QSAs will be recognized in a Council maintained and published list and can begin conducting PA-DSS assessments in accordance with the PA-DSS Security Audit Procedures. (NASDAQ: CSTR) has launched a Change for our Earth program to commemorate National Coin Week (April 20 - 26) and Earth Day (April 22). The program encourages a new form of recycling, educating consumers on the environmental benefits of putting coins back into circulation, thereby reducing the need for limited natural resources used to create new coins. An estimated $10 billion in coin sitting idle in U.S. households, reusing even 10 percent could supply roughly 15 billion coins, contributing significantly to the country’s coin needs, according to Coinstar. The Coinstar National Currency Poll found that 81 percent of Americans don’t feel guilty about having change sitting around. The company said 78 percent of poll respondents said they would make more of an effort to put coins back into circulation if they knew it would reduce environmental impacts. “Coins are one of the most durable products in our economy and, unlike paper bills, have a lifespan of 30 years or more. And with the demand for currency rising, it’s more important than ever to reuse an existing resource,” said Alex Camara, senior vice president and general manager of worldwide coin at Coinstar, Inc. Coins can be put back into circulation by using it in daily transactions, donating to penny or coin drives, converting at self-service coin counting machines, or taking coins to the bank. The Council said that it will also roll out a program to include maintenance of a list of validated payment applications this fall. This list will enable buyers to identify the payment applications that have been recognized by the PCI SSC and meet the new standard. The council said that criminals are increasingly targeting vulnerabilities in payment applications to steal payment card data, and some software may be storing sensitive card data on a user’s system unknowingly. “Many merchants and retailers rely on thirdparty software vendors for applications that run payment processing,” said J. Joseph Finizio, Executive Director, Retail Solutions Providers Association. “Having the Council manage a globally-recognized list of validated payment applications will make it easier for merchants of all sizes to select validated payment applications that are accepted by all the major payment brands, ensuring that cardholder data continues to be secure.” The PCI Security Standards Council is a global, open industry standards body providing management of the Payment Card Industry Data First Data Gives Ingenico I-Series Class A Support Gets Exclusivity to Market Terminals ATLANTA, GA (May 15, 2008) Ingenico said that it will gain Class A certification by First Data Corporation for its i-Series terminals including the i5100, i7780, i3010 PIN pad and the new, lowcost AQUA transaction terminal. “We see this as an excellent opportunity to expand our current relationship with First Data and its partners,” said Geoff Bowen, president, Ingenico North America. Brian Mooney, president, Merchant Services, First Data said, “The certification of Ingenico supports our goal of building out a spectrum of products and services that are tailored to meet the needs of merchants of all sizes. We value partnerships and believe that Ingenico will provide specific value for the merchants served by our channels.” In related news, TASQ, a First Data subsidiary has gotten an exclusive deal to market Ingenico’s new AQUA transaction terminal. Lisa Shipley, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Ingenico North America, said, “The AQUA terminal is one of the lowest cost, PCI PED terminals on the market today and clearly provides a solution for our customers who are looking to upgrade their current non-PCI terminal base in a cost-effective manner. It has multiapplication and multi-merchant capabilities, an English and Spanish payment application that can be activated easily by the merchant. With its small footprint, low price and full functionality, the AQUA terminal should serve a wide segment of merchants,” said Shipley. “TASQ’s excellent help desk support will go a long way in enabling Ingenico to actively promote and sell its products to the thousands of ISO’s and Agents TASQ supports throughout North America. This will undoubtedly improve Ingenico’s performance in what we call our InDirect Channel,” said Bowen. TASQ will be offering Level 1 help desk support on the AQUA terminal by month end and certification will take place in 2008. Class B+ certification is currently available for certain channels. DALLAS, TX (April 10, 2008) 7-Eleven, Inc. is looking for the next hot product or prepaid service at an invitation-only Innovation Day event in June. The convenience retailer is asking suppliers, vendors and manufacturers to apply to participate in its third Innovation event June 10-11, 2008, at its headquarters in Dallas. At that time, finalists will submit their ideas for consideration by the company’s senior merchandising team. “When we last held this event in 2002, we received some 400 applications and selected 15 companies for face-to-face reviews,” said Kevin Elliott, 7-Eleven’s senior vice president of merchandising and logistics. “We want to expand the program to two days and bring more products, services and capabilities that meet the ever-changing needs of our convenienceoriented customers.” Elliott said 7-Eleven receives thousands of new ideas each year, and introduces at least 25 new products to its stores each week. 7-Eleven operates or franchises more than 5,600 stores in the United States, “We designated Innovation Day to provide local and national vendors, whether they’ve worked with us in the past, currently or never before, the opportunity to present their new, innovative ideas to our merchandising executives,” he said. “We want to keep our product pipeline full so we’re looking for companies that will come with great, new ideas, unique concepts, manufacturing capabilities and resources to meet the demand of our more than six-million customers a day.” Elliot explained that 7-Eleven, Inc. offers scale, information and an understanding of customers’ convenience needs. “We have the ability to help manufacturers refine products and introduce them nationally or regionally to millions of consumers. Our ordering systems and sophisticated distribution network can handle logistics on the front end, while our systems technology allows us to track data by store and by market to provide immediate feedback to the supplier on how well their products or ideas are selling.” With retail shelf-space at a premium, competition is fierce among manufacturers for product placement and much-coveted facings. In the small space of a 7-Eleven store, that’s especially so where product sales and profitability are literally measured in inches. 7-Eleven uses its “first, best, only” strategy and customer focus as benchmarks to assess new product offerings, according to Elliott. “First and foremost, everything is based on meeting what the customer will want or need. After that, we want 7-Eleven to be first to market, offer the best quality and value and, if possible, to have product exclusivity. That’s a tall order and a day-in, day-out challenge. We’re looking for products people need that will exceed customer expectations for quality and value.” The Innovation Day application form and criteria are available at 7-Eleven’s web site, www.7-Eleven.com. Every application will be reviewed, and companies selected to participate will be contacted to schedule an appointment time with the management team. Each company’s presentation will be held to 20 minutes.
