South Bend TV Station Reports Debit Card Theft A television station in South Bend, Indiana, WSBT, reported that debit card fraud has increased 75% over the last year, according to police in La Porte County. Gift Cards That Quit Giving Kurtis Ming, an investigative reporter for CBS 13 in San Francisco has done a report that says, although consumers are entitled to get back cash on gift cards balances of less than ten bucks, if they ask for it, many stores are not complying with the California law. Ming exposed this problem back in February, and told the stores about the problem. In April, Ming made a return visit to ten randomly chosen stores to see if things had changed. Ming said he bought the cards, and spent them down WSJ Advises Consumers to Use Gift Cards Quickly Emily Green, reporting in the Wall Street Journal, recently advised consumers to use gift cards as soon as possible. Her rationale is that in bad economic times, cards may be invalidated by bankruptcy of the retailer. She said that bankruptcy laws do not require companies to redeem gift certificates. According to her report, retailers have handled unredeemed gift cards differently, depending on their situation. The report said that Sharper Image stopped accepting its gift cards temporarily after it filed for bankruptcy protection in February. She said Sharper Image did start taking the cards again, but only if consumers made a purchase that at least doubled the card’s value. It also refused to rebate unused balances. In April, a challenge to Sharper Image’s policy was rejected by a court in California that refused to hear the state attorney general’s case.
