Training Industry Quarterly - Spring 2008 - (Page 36) MEET JIM MITNICK PEER REVIEW I 36 n many ways the learning industry is both a new creation and a time-honored system of recognition and advancement. Certainly there’s nothing new about the concept of workforce development, but it is driven today by new technologies, new incentives and new levels of commitment. Jim Mitnick knows a thing or two about commitment. Now an award-winning learning leader, Jim didn’t just hire into his position, he built it. That’s fitting, since he’s in charge of learning for Turner Construction, builders of some of the world’s largest structures. Now senior vice president in charge of knowledge management, learning and development, Jim’s been with Turner Construction for 37 years. For the past seven he’s been leading the internal knowledge network that connects Turner’s staff of 6,000 people working out of 45 offices around the globe. Jim’s responsibilities include determining strategy, measuring outcomes, de- veloping new Web-based and instructor-led content that is aligned with business objectives and implementing Turner’s knowledge management systems. “Jim is a longtime innovator and visionary in the field of elearning,” said Richard Klingshirn, executive managing director of ACS Learning Services. “Jim not only continues to drive innovative new learning and knowledge solutions to meet the business needs of Turner and their extended network of partners, but has grown to be an expert in the field. Jim has immersed himself in the issues around social networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing, continuing to drive us to enhance our abilities to build and deliver world-class learning services to our clients.” Training Industry Quarterly spoke with Jim Mitnick recently about his work at Turner and his thoughts on workforce training, learning and development.
