It’s not the panacea for all of our issues, but it really does give us a starting place for all of our content, which becomes really important.” Thompson feels lucky to work for an organization that values training and development as a key component to the business, but he also knows that training effectiveness requires more than the support for and creation of content. So when he took over his current role nearly two years ago, one of his first orders of business was to undergo a “listening tour” to branch offices. “Our job is not to just offer training. Our job is to give them the skills and resources they need to be successful. That 44 is the key to today’s workforce,” he said. “Those we hire in our new workforce, they need success immediately. They come to us with multiple job offers. It didn’t used to be that way. We want to give them access and tools and resources to really grow beyond their wildest dreams in this organization.” Looking for a Winning Strategy That workforce-centric approach is clearly working. In 2006, Adecco saw only 78 course completions, but in 2007, that number swelled to 56,000. That number becomes even more impressive when you realize it was all delivered in live environments, not online. “E-learning standalone is brutal,” Thompson said. “It is better than nothing, but I would say barely. Classroom standalone is really good, but it’s just not economical. If I had all 7,000 people in one building, I could make it work, but I’m all across North America, including Canada.” Currently, Thompson is overseeing efforts to reduce the classroom time, which includes more online course and class time that’s been trimmed in some cases from eight to three days. The classroom isn’t going away, it’s just that Adecco is making harder decisions about what and who attends live training.
