MEET VINCE EUGENIO aturally, all business must be fluid to a point, flexible enough to bend to reach new markets when appropriate, but rigid enough to keep the core values in place. That’s a mission that’s even more critical when it comes to the healthcare industry, where professionals must deliver a certain standard of care in the face of everchanging conditions and needs. At Cardinal Health, that’s where Vince Eugenio comes in. As the company’s vice president of enterprise learning solutions, Vince supports the soft skills learning needs of 43,000 employees worldwide at the organization that manufactures and delivers medical and surgical supplies and technologies. Cardinal Health is undergoing a rapid transformation from a holding company to an operating company. This transformation is supported by ExcellerateHRO, Cardinal Health’s HR outsourcing. While Vince and his team are spearheading new training delivery infrastructure for Cardinal, he’s not alone. The company’s 14 functional heads have collaboratively developed and are aligned behind the new vision for learning The collaborated enterprise training strategy is really playing to Vince’s strengths: Over the course of his 20-year career in corporate learning, he’s been with some leading organizations devoted to workforce development, including AT&T, Bank of America and Randstad. Each move he’s taken has brought increasing levels of responsibility, but always in terms of brining fragmented or de-centralized learning organizations together as a corporate function, much as he’s doing with Cardinal Health. “I think the healthcare space is a phenomenal space to be in,” PEER REVIEW N Vince said. “We’re really a company that provides healthcare solutions, such as medical supplies, infection prevention, infusion pumps, surgical instruments, drug inventory management technology, such as hospital pharmacy services. At the enterprise level, learning is focused on development of manager and employee capability. We have our EPPIC core values, of being ethical performance-driven, people-focused, innovative and collaborative.” Vince has also focused heavily on high-potential training throughout his career. At Cardinal, he’s now working on implementing a management development pipeline and creating rolebased training for the management track. “We’re trying to really be a premiere health care company,” Vince said. “Making health care safer and more productive is our mission.” Vince’s broad set of experiences in his career brings a “more practical perspective” to the business of workforce development. “There’s a lot of theory and a lot of examination of options rather than a kind of ‘roll up your sleeves’ and look at what’s a practical, doable solution in the environment you’re in now,” he said. “I think a lot of times people get strategic and they see the vision five years out, but they get hung up on the day-to-day. “It’s really the ability of the senior person to create a compelling, exciting vision of the future and to align the organization against that, and to help others understand how to get there,” Vince said. “That’s going to take some time to do, but it is what makes the work interesting” 38 Training Industry Quarterly, Summer 2008 / A Training Industry, Inc. ezine / www.trainingindustry.com/TIQ http://www.trainingindustry.com/TIQ
