The content is reviewed by the author’s manager prior to publishing. The content is reviewed by a designated committee prior to publishing. After publishing: The content is reviewed and managed by the user community through comments, ratings and flagging after publishing. Another consideration when implementing user-generated learning content is determining who is allowed to publish content. Some companies enable any worker to publish content, while others are more restrictive and only allow specific types or categories of workers to publish content. Often a worker is restricted to publishing content that is related to their work function, and distribution is confined to that unit. Technology Concerns The underlying technology to support user-generated learning content is also a consideration. An increasing number of companies have successfully deployed user-generated learning content implementations. The acceptable formats of user-generated learning content can also be managed to help simplify implementation and management. Typical formats for user generated learning content are text, audio, Power Point, video and Flash, with basic text representing the primary and simplest format. The above topics focus primarily on issues surrounding the technical aspects of a user-generated learning content implementation. Another critical factor is participation. Its intrinsic value is the quality and quantity of the learning content it contains and the value that brings to its users. No matter how sophisticated and elegant the infrastructure, without content and participation, the initiative will not be a success. User-generated learning content implementations should be built around an existing community or business problem where there is already user dialogue and perhaps user-generated learning content in place. This might be a product announcement, sales initiative, business process or new technology. There are too many stories of elegant user-generated learning content systems that were put in place but did not succeed due to lack of participation. Managing Content Two very successful implementations of user-generated learning content systems can be found at CH2M Hill and Sun Microsystems. CH2M Hill is a global engineering company whose engineers utilize a wide range of CAD CAM products. To help their engineers utilize these products more effectively, CH2M Hill publishes short user-generated training segments for the usage of specific and commonly used CAD CAM functions. The segments are approximately 50 seconds in length, developed in Camtasia, deployed in Microsoft Share Point and train users in specific CAD CAM functions on a variety of products.
