LEARNERS EXPECT TO ACCESS LEARNING 24/7, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE AND ON MORE THAN ONE DEVICE. Organizations are increasing their use of cross-functional and cross-hierarchical collaboration to solve problems. Employees are creating personal relevance by accessing discrete bits of content and combining them in unique ways to achieve performance in a given context. These converging and emerging trends are driving organizations to incorporate mobile delivery into their global learning and performance support strategies. With the variety of available devices, however, organizations are looking for a sustainable approach to providing employees with the information, instruction and performance support they need on their devices. HOW RESPONSIVE DESIGN WORKS Responsive websites dynamically adjust themselves according to the device viewing them. A good example is The Boston Globe, which provides an optimal online experience no matter what device you might be using. Desktops get a full-blown interface with videos, large images, and animations. Smartphones get a simplified web site that runs fast without the bells and whistles. Tablets and netbooks get something in between. In his book "Responsive Web Design," Ethan Marcotte notes that responsive design enables us to "embrace the flexibility inherent to the Web, without surrendering the control we require as designers." As learning and performance support professionals, we can leverage the flexibility inherent in the responsive design of content, imagery and interactivity to drive learning and performance improvements. This can be done with a change in our philosophy toward online content and interactive design. Instead of designing a fixed layout mobile version and a desktop version of a piece of learning content, you're designing a version intended to work on a range of devices. The presentation of the content in a browser on a specific device will respond to the exact size of the device screen. When a new device comes out that's a little larger or smaller than your target, the content will respond without having to be rebuilt or customized.
