Food Protection Trends - January 2009 - (Page 39) Student Travel Scholarship Award Christopher Nnadozie Njoku Linkoping University Sweden lthough I was unable to attend IAFP 2008 in Columbus, Ohio, participating in the IAFP Fourth European Symposium on Food Safety in Lisbon, Portugal, gave me another opportunity to meet many food safety professionals in person. The symposium was fantastic. Despite the fact that I arrived late, I was able to attend seminars presented by a variety of knowledgeable professionals. The most interesting part of being in Lisbon was when we traveled around at night to visit some of the city’s ancient and recognized places. This three-hour journey was followed up by dinner, A after which we all went back to our various hotels. Friday was a great day for me, because I had the opportunity to have breakfast with Executive Director David Tharp, his wife, and other professionals before joining the Organizing Committee for their brief meeting concerning the planning and different opinions on how to improve the 2009 European Symposium in Berlin, Germany. At the beginning of Friday’s session, I was invited to come forward for the award plaque, which was presented to me by IAFP President Stan Bailey. Many of the presentations were geared towards risk assessment and risk management; but when I came across a paper on climate change implications for food safety, I realized that my overall conference experience would help me to educate some of the students in my home country of Nigeria. A few days after I arrived home, I was able to create awareness among my students on the need to advance food safety throughout the whole world. I thank IAFP for choosing me to receive a 2008 Student Travel Scholarship. JANUARY 2009 | FOOD PROTECTION TRENDS 39
