from the executive director ebruary is a very busy month for IAFP and is particularly busy this year for a number of reasons.Those include the approaching 100-Year Anniversary Celebration, our April Workshop, the European Symposium in addition to our “ n o r m a l ” i t em s l i ke Aw a rd s nominations, Secretary election and our Program Committee and Board meetings. Let’s take a closer look at these events. First up on the time line is the Program Committee meeting. Actually, by the time you read this article, the Committee meeting will probably be concluded as they meet in Milwaukee on February 4 and 5. The Program Committee puts in endless hours during the year to develop the very high-quality program for IAFP’s Annual Meeting. During their face-to-face meeting in Milwaukee, they will review more than 500 abstracts, making decisions on whether to accept or reject them for presentation along with a final review of symposium proposals and arranging the entire program schedule. The group works for 12 hours on Friday and another 7 hours on Saturday to accomplish their mission. We are fortunate to have so many IAFP Members who are willing to serve on this Committee and to give up a weekend at home. In fact, this is the most sought after Committee position by IAFP Members! The Board meeting follows the Program Committee meeting on Sunday and Monday morning concluding the four-day event in Milwaukee. Our Board members also give up this weekend at home to further the goals of and provide direction to IAFP. Holding the Program Committee and Board meetings at the site of our next Annual Meeting provides an opportunity to “preview” “COMMENTARY” F By DAVID W. THARP, CAE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “As you can see February is a very busy month for IAFP” the time to polish up those nominations and get them to the IAFP office! We have thirteen awards available to recognize a lifetime of service and contributions to IAFP and food safety. A full list of awards is available on the IAFP Web site along with the nomination criteria. One of the more actively sought after recognitions each year is the Student Travel Scholarship. Last year, more than 50 applications were received from IAFP Student Members for this honor with eight being selected. The IAFP Foundation fully supports travel expenses for the students selected to attend IAFP’s Annual Meeting. The application deadline is March 1 for this scholarship and the criteria is available on the IAFP Web site. Additionally, February is the opening of the Secretary Election. This year, we have candidates from the governmental sector. They are Maria Nazarowec-White, Associate Director at Health Canada in Ottawa, Ontario and Don Zink, Senior Science Advisor at the US Food & Drug Administration-CFSAN in College Park, Maryland. We are privileged to have two, very fine candidates this year – you can’t go wrong in choosing either! Be sure to cast your vote online before the March 15 deadline. Other events and projects that are now underway are: Workshop: Microbial C h a l l e n g e Te s t i n g for Foods Workshop, Rosemont, IL April 7–8 – Registration now open. • European Symposium on Food Safety: Ede, The Netherlands May 18–20 – Registration now open. • IAFP 2011: Milwaukee, WI July 31–August 3 – Registration now open. • the facilities we will use in August. It also gives our staff the opportunity to work together with the facility staff we’ll work with during IAFP 2011. March 1 marks the deadline for Award nominations and for applications for the Student Travel Scholarship. Therefore, February is 86 FOOD PROTECTION TRENDS | FEBRUARY 2011
