“REFLECTIONS” OF YOuR president ell, 2011 has begun with a bang! Even though you will be reading this in March, I’d like to share one of my January experiences with you. Picture this… a Tuesday morning, 8:30 a.m., the phone rings. It’s my mom (who had had knee replacement surgery just two weeks before) to tell me that my father went into the hospital emergently for abdominal surgery. I immediately jump on a plane to New York City and take a shuttle to my hometown in Connecticut, about 12 hours ahead of the Jan. 27th snowstorm (yes, the snowiest Januar y o n re c o rd f o r t h e N ew York metropolitan area, some 60 inches in southwestern Connecticut since Christmas!). We got another 18–20 inches the day after I arrived. So, I spent the week shoveling snow, doing errands for and with my mom, visiting my dad in the hospital, shoveling more snow, and of course, seeing family. Which brings me to my message this month—it’s about family. Despite the stresses of the previous week, seeing everyone was an unexpected silver lining. We managed to help and support one another; to simply “be” in the moment; and to have a few laughs as well. It was, on the whole, a good week. We all have our own nuclear families, extended families, good friends, and professional families. Whether it is counting on one of my colleagues to give me advice (personal or professional), or asking them to help out with an IAFP activity or duty, there is always someone there to lend a hand. The evidence surrounds us, ranging from those who give their time to Program Committee , various PDGs, or helping in planning our 100-year anniversary. I thank you all for your commitment to me and to the Association. Please k n ow h ow mu c h yo u a l l mean to me, and how much you mean to each other. We are all truly blessed to have such a special professional family! So, in closing this month, I would like to share with you one of our family activities from this past week. You know the game Scrabble ® ? Well, there is a newer version called Scrabble Flash. If you haven’t played it yet, give it a tr y. My 10 year old nephew, Ben, challenged me to a match. Without sharing the details, I basically stunk! And this sort of performance from a woman who prides herself on her writing skills! Consistent with the 10 year old mind, Ben made sure to point out my inadequacies, taking great pride that he beat a “doctor” so handily. I can’t share Scrabble Flash with you, but I can share another word game. So, see how many IAFP words you can find in this one. Enjoy (believe me, it’s tough, too)!
