from the executive director “COMMENTARY” W here were you the first of August? I hope you were with us in Milwaukee to celebrate the Association’s 100-Year Anniversary at IAFP 2011. If you were not able to be with us, it is really unfortunate because you missed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the Association’s 100-Year birthday. To mark this very special occasion, we had displays, videos, oral recordings, a 100-Year Toast and a gala event that will be long remembered by all who participated. There were quarter-century boards showing important historical happenings by each 25-year period of IAFP’s existence. Throughout the days of Annual Meeting, pairs of Members were professionally recorded by StoryCorps to document where IAFP is at this time in history and to chronicle stories about people of the Association. These recordings will be archived in the American Folklife Center at the U.S. Library of Congress and they even have a slim possibility of being excerpted and broadcast on National Public Radio across the United States. At the Opening Session, a 100Year Toast video was viewed by all in attendance and included a surprise ending. If you missed the debut, you can view it through IAFP’s 100Year Web page or it is available on You Tube (search for “IAFP toast”). Just for an enticement, I can tell you that “milk” is involved! For those in the know, IAFP began in 1911 as the International Association of Milk and Dairy Inspectors. Milk and dairy have always strongly influenced our Association and we are proud of our dairy background. The 100-Year Toast video pays tribute to IAFP Members and our dairy heritage. The “main event” for our 100Year Celebration took place on Monday night at the Milwaukee Art Museum. As the busses unloaded, some of Milwaukee’s fanciest Harley motorcycles and their owners were gathered around the fountain to welcome us to the Museum. Once inside, everyone was greeted with a commemorative 100Year beer stein and a pamphlet recognizing contributors who helped make the entire celebration possible. In addition, more than 35 varieties of Wisconsin artisan cheese were highlighted in the pamphlet and were available for all to taste. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Wisconsin Association for Food Protection and the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board for their part in arranging the “Taste of Wisconsin” for all to enjoy. In addition to the special cheese, many exceptional Wisconsin meats and sweets were served. The Milk Marketing Board provided a “key connection” to our award winning chef, Chef John Esser and the artisan cheese makers. Chef John along with Andrea Neu and Shully’s Catering developed the fantastic menu and displays for the evening, including many wonderful Wisconsin products. For those who were not so hungry, the magnificent art on display, including the special, “Summer in China” exhibition, was open to all. Surely, something was provided for everyone during the 100Year Gala Celebration! There was a special cake presentation by the Past Presidents to commemorate IAFP’s 100-years of accomplishments. Immediately following, the band struck up and people danced the night away! The band played music from Polka to rock to country and everyone seemed to enjoy either dancing or watching those who were. With more than 2,500 people in attendance at IAFP 2011, we were delighted when over 1,000 attended our 100-Year Gala Celebration. It was a fitting way to celebrate 100-years of IAFP; an association dedicated to providing safe food and protecting the public’s health. As I said in the beginning, we hope you were able to be with us in Milwaukee to celebrate the Association’s 100-Year Anniversary.
