A NOTE FROM THE FPT SCIENTIFIC EDITOR… I n late 2010, a subcommittee of the Food Protection Trends Management Committee undertook the task of reviewing and summarizing research published in IAFP journals over the past 100 years. Beginning in January, 2011 and concluding in August, 2011, the subcommittee published an article in each FPT issue, “Celebrating 100 Years of IAFP Journals,” that spanned the 100-year history of IAFP, decade by decade. If you haven’t seen these articles, ﬂip to the last page of each issue (Jan. – Aug.) to ﬁnd them. The subcommittee did an excellent job of summarizing research trends, hot topics, and changes in food safety foci over the decades, and I applaud the members for their hard work! During 2011, FPT continued to see a reduction in laboratory-based research articles with a concurrent increase in articles dealing with topics such as retail food protection, consumer food protection, and general trends in food safety and sanitation. This change in the focus of FPT publications is not accidental. Through much consideration of the FPT Management Committee, it was determined that FPT needed a better “identity,” with the idea that the Journal of Food Protection is already recognized as IAFP’s primary journal that targets the laboratory-based research community. This certainly is not to suggest that non-laboratory research is of lesser importance. However, the target audience may, in fact, differ substantially, and we are attempting to ensure that FPT does not neglect the signiﬁcant proportion of IAFP members whose interests lie in topics not addressed by traditional laboratory-based research. Examples of the types of articles that FPT seeks are exempliﬁed by “Consumer Knowledge and Handling of Tree Nuts: Food Safety Implications” (Jan.), “Current Food Safety Issues of Homeprepared Vegetables and Herbs Stored in Oil” (June), and “Relationship between Cleaning Practices and Microbiological Contamination in Domestic Kitchens” (Nov.), all published in 2011. Although FPT saw a tremendous increase in submitted articles in 2009 (39 vs. 23 in 2008), numbers have declined since (34 in 2010, 27 in 2011). During the IAFP Annual Meeting, there are substantial numbers of poster presentations, in particular, that focus on the types of research described above. We encourage all of those who are working on these types of studies to consider submitting your work to FPT for publication. It is worth noting that FPT is now cited by SCOPUS (http://www.scopus.com/home.url). Scopus advertises to be the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature.
