IN IN MEMORIAM MEMORIAM David D. (Dave) Fry David D. (Dave) Fry 1928-2013 1928-2013 David D. (Dave) Fry, a 59-year IAFP Member, was born in 1928. During the early years of WWII when his father was an electrical construction worker, Dave attended seven different high schools located in five states within a four-year period. He eventually graduated in 1946 from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. That same year, Dave was drafted and served in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division from 1946-1948, logging 11 jumps as a paratrooper. Immediately after his discharge, he was employed by Purdue University Creamery, where he remained over the next five years. During this time, his interest in dairy grew, and he enrolled in Purdue University's School of Dairy Science. After attending Purdue, Dave moved to Florida to work in supervisory positions at T.G. Lee Foods, Orlando; Lifestyle Foods, Orange City (Cultured Products Plant); and Borden's Dairy, Orlando. He eventually retired from Bunge Foods in Atlanta, GA in 1993 from his position as a Tech Service Specialist working with dairies throughout the U.S., Canada, and Central America. Dave's many activities throughout his long career included serving on the USDA Collegiate Dairy Products Judging Team as a milk judge for 10 years. He also served on the By-Laws Committee for the Interstate Milk Shippers and for 15 years served as a Trustee of and the Secretary-Treasurer for the 3-A Sanitary Standards Symbol Administrative Council. He was a founding member of the Board of the 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. As a long-time Member of IAFP, Dave held many roles within the association. In 1978, he served as President for the organization then known as IAMFES. He also served on five Local Arrangements Committees for Annual Meetings: Miami, St. Petersburg, Orlando, and twice for Atlanta. Dave was also a delegate for more than 20 years for the Georgia Association for Food Protection and the Florida Association for Food Protection. Throughout his six decades with IAFP, Dave was recognized with many service awards. In 1993, he received the Harold Barnum Industry Award, honored for his dedication and exceptional service to IAFP. That same year, he was also recognized by the Florida Association for Food Protection with the Dr. C. Bronson Lane Memorial Award for Excellence. In recognition of his dedication and service to the high ideals and objectives of IAFP, he received the distinguished Honorary Life Membership Award in 1998. In 2002, Dave was presented a Fellow Award for his many contributions to IAFP and its Affiliates with distinction over an extended period of time. And for his years of dedication and devotion to the Association's ideals and objectives, Dave earned the coveted Harry Haverland Citation Award in 2004. Other activities Dave was involved with over the years include: the Indiana State Guard; Civil Air Patrol; Orange County, FL Sheriff's Task Force; Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor; and T.G. Lee Dairy Credit Union Manager/Treasurer (where he proudly noted that accounts increased from $300 to $300,000 during his tenure). He also served in various positions with his church, including Southern Baptist Deacon in both Orlando and Lilburn, GA. Dave was commissioned by the Governor as a Kentucky Colonel. He was a 53-year member of the Masonic Lodge FAM in Orlando and taught AARP Safe Driving courses to over 1,000 students in 11 years. Dave was married for 66 years to his high school sweetheart, Iris E. Yost. His family includes one sister, three children, and seven grandchildren. His leisure time involved church activities with the senior group and senior choir, and he enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his family. Dave passed away October 25, 2013 in Lawrenceville, Georgia at the age of 85.
