Dubai International Food Safety Conference

The 11th Dubai International Food Safety Conference
(DIFSC) and IAFP's Fifth Middle East Symposium on Food
Safety took place 19-21 November, 2017 at the Dubai World
Trade Centre, Dubai, U.A.E.
IAFP provides valuable support to this growing conference,
uniting food safety professionals for educational opportunities and
networking. This year's event, organized by the Dubai Municipality,
featured an impressive faculty of reputed speakers, world-renowned
scientists, respected food safety professionals and high-profile speakers. Along with IAFP, supporting organizations included Creme Global,
SAFE (Arab Food Safety Initiative for Trade Facilitation) and UNIDO,
working closely together to provide a compelling variety of topics,
research work, presentations, lectures, and Master Class Sessions.
Two thousand delegates, along with more than 150 presentations and 40 exhibitors, once again reflected the importance of
addressing the world's food safety challenges. With the theme of
"Predict, Prevent & Protect," the symposia looked beyond - while
maintaining a connection to - food safety, focusing on timely and
trending topics that addressed the opportunities and challenges in
the emerging technology and data-driven food safety world.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General, Dubai Municipality,
and Noura Al Shamsi, Chairperson of the Dubai International Food
Safety Conference, provided opening remarks to attendees. Next,
John Elder, Founder, Elder Research, USA, presented the Keynote
Address, Thinking Hard and Soft: The Clash of Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Human Expertise. For the third year, a series
of highly successful Master Class Sessions were held throughout

both days, covering a vast array of subjects, including Driving Food
Safety Culture in an Organization: Integrating Data-driven Tools
for Assessment; TACCP (Threat Analysis Critical Control Point) in
Practice; and Data Analytical and Predictive Tools in Food Safety
Risk Assessment and Nutrition. Master Class presenters included
Joanne Taylor, Andrew Schumer, Andrew Collins, Sandrine
Pigat and Cronan McNamara.
IAFP President-Elect Tim Jackson presented Microbiological
Ecology and Adaptation and Its Impact on Risk Management and
IAFP Past Presidents Don Schaffner and Frank Yiannas presented
Introduction to Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment and Its
Application in the Food Industry and Why Should #Technology Trend
in Food Safety: Exploring Blockchain (respectively). Other presenters
included Ruth Petran, who talked about The Power to Prevent and
Protect: Leveraging Data to Identify Valid Controls; Ian Jenson,
speaking on Risk Management of Meat in International Supply
Chains: Beyond Food Safety; and Sabah Bidawid, who spoke
about Novel Technologies for the Detection of Foodborne Viruses.
Other speakers and panelists included Walid Ali, Ben Chapman,
Darin Detwiler, Vincent Hegarty, Suresh Pillai, and Shima
Shayanfar.
The combined efforts between IAFP, the Dubai Municipality
and DIFSC organizers continue to produce a highly reputable food
safety conference that provides an ideal platform for the food safety
community to work, learn, share and mutually benefit from one
another.
