PDG HIGHLIGHT
The Dairy Safety &
Quality Professional
Development Group
The Dairy Safety & Quality Professional Development Group's mission is to promote the production and
processing of safe, high quality dairy products and to
develop program topics and symposia for presentation at
the IAFP Annual Meetings. Our PDG currently has over
290 members that include professionals from industry,
government and academia that collaborate on proposals
for symposia, panel discussions and roundtables as well
as webinars. The leadership team of the PDG includes
Yvonne Masters (Chair), Nancy Huls (Vice Chair), and
Wendy McMahon (Secretary).
During the IAFP Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida, the PDG had a couple of invited speakers discuss
dairy-related and regulatory topics. Chad Galer gave
an overview of the work done at the Innovation Center
for U.S. Dairy. John Allan reviewed some updates from
the National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments
(NCIMS) meeting including alignment of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), and Preventive Controls for Human
Food (PCHF). David Wankowski discussed the requirements for the Foreign Supplier Verification Program
(FSVP). The PDG members brainstormed proposals
for symposia topics during the meeting and some PDG
members stepped up as group leaders after the meeting
to finalize and submit symposia topics for consideration
for the IAFP Annual Meeting.
Some of the topics submitted for consideration for the
upcoming IAFP Annual Meeting include water conservation in dairy production and process, microbiological
testing perspectives in the dairy industry, rapid microbiological testing methods in dairy, and spores in the
global dairy industry.
In addition, the PDG was tasked to form a subgroup
to review and update the Pocket Guide to Dairy Sanitation, which is free and available on the IAFP Web site.
The subgroup is reviewing the guide and will revise
it as necessary. The plan is to have it updated by the
beginning of 2018.
During the year, the Dairy Safety & Quality PDG
has conference calls to discuss symposia proposals,
progress of the subgroup working on revising guides,
any hot topics in the dairy industry, and preparations
for the next IAFP Annual Meeting.
