Tierney, Editorial Director mtierney@trimedmedia.com Good news, at last Our Top Trends cover story this month offers a breath of fresh air. In the crazy, mixed-up financial world of America today, the survey brings good news—for healthcare and patients—in the name of innovation. We need it and it bodes well for all of us focused on, and dedicated to, imaging and IT in healthcare. A quick overview of Top Trends shows that the business priorities are right where we expected them, with patient satisfaction getting top-billing, followed by improving productivity and workflow, improving patient care, dealing with decreases in reimbursement and creating new revenue sources. Budgets for imaging and IT are solid too, healthcare facility executives and leaders tell us. Fifty-four percent are spending more this year than last on clinical IT systems; 52 percent are increasing imaging systems buys; and 60 percent have more to spend on IT infrastructure. Radiology information systems, radiology PACS and cardiology PACS are the top clinical IT purchases in 2008 among all types of healthcare facilities. Speech recognition software, advanced visualization software and CPOE are the top secondary IT purchases. Ultrasound is the most-purchased imaging system this year, surpassing digital mammography, which moves to No. 3. CT retains its No. 2 spot from last year—with 32 percent of our 661 survey respondents telling us they are opting for 64-slice systems. Radiology departments are still seeing the most CT installs. PET/CT made the Top 10 list for the first time this year at No. 7. Dealing with growing data volumes is top of mind for imaging and IT professionals, with data storage ranking No. 1 in IT infrastructure purchases this year. Disaster recovery/business continuity is second and data networks is fifth. What else is gaining popularity for building revenue? Adding a cardiology service line, doing more marketing and providing remote access to images and information to referring physicians to gain mindshare and more referrals. Check out the story that begins on page 10. For some apples-to-apples comparison, we’ve also sliced the data based on four facility types—community hospital, multi-hospital group/IDN, academic medical center and imaging center. There’s plenty more good news there, too. Healthimaging.com october 2008 | Health Imaging & IT 7 http://www.HealthImaging.com
