N E W S U P D AT E MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS BUSINESS BUZZ  GE ACQUIRES Dynamic Imaging GE Healthcare has acquired Dynamic Imaging, the Allendale, N.J.-based developer of the IntegradWeb family of web-based RIS and PACS products. The purchase bolsters GE’s line of RIS and PACS applications and continues the firm’s recent expansion of this product line, such as its $1.2 billion acquisition of IDX Systems in 2006. In addition, it opens up new market territory for GE by providing it with an image and information system offering tailored for the community hospital and diagnostic outpatient imaging sector. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. GE GLOBAL RESEARCH, GE’s research and development organization, and GE HEALTHCARE have signed a three-year collaborative research agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to discover and develop advanced in vitro diagnostic assays that may predict cancer treatment response to targeted therapies. The initial focus of the research will be geared towards the disease, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Philips to acquire Raytel Cardiac Services for $110M Royal Philips Electronics will acquire Raytel Cardiac Services, a provider of home cardiac monitoring services, and other ancillary operations from SHL Telemedicine for a cash purchase of approximately $110 million. The transaction, currently awaiting regulatory approval, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2007. At that time, the Windsor, Conn.-based Raytel will become part of Philips’ Home Healthcare Solutions business group. Raytel products, which are sold to physicians and cardiologists, will be rebranded under the Philips name when the transaction is complete. Raytel Cardiac Services currently employs 15,000 referring physicians and cardiologists who serve more than 200,000 patients annually. Raytel’s healthcare professionals use telephone and internet technology to monitor patients with pacemakers, suspected arrhythmias, implanted defibrillators and other cardiac conditions.  JOHNSON & JOHNSON subsidiary, ETHICON ENDO-SURGERY, has filed a lawsuit against HOLOGIC, accusing it of violating four patents on a tumor-detection system. J&J’s complaint seeks to stop Hologic and Suros Surgical Systems from infringing the patents as well as the recovery of damages and costs from the alleged infringement. MISYS will make its Connect healthcare solution available to the open-source development community. Working with open-source developers is considered a first step toward establishing open standards in healthcare. The move comes after months of building an open source division, Misys Open Source Solutions. Misys Open Source Solutions has joined the Eclipse Foundation, a non-profit foundation dedicated to open source development. QUANTUM has filed a patent infringement suit against RIVERBED TECHNOLOGY. According to the suit, Riverbed has infringed and continues to infringe upon Quantum patent by selling products that employ a method of data de-duplication covered by the patent. HOLOGIC and AURORA IMAGING TECHNOLOGY have paired their products for MRI-guided breast biopsy. Hologic said its Suros needle guide insert fits to Aurora’s rotating needle guide arm, allowing for compatibility of the Suros ATEC MRI breast biopsy device with the Aurora 1.5-Tesla dedicated breast MRI system. HealthImaging.com  NUANCE EXPANDS with acquisition of Commissure & Vocada Nuance Communications has acquired Commissure and Vocada. Nuance said that the acquisition of Commissure will expand its Dictaphone Healthcare Solutions division that caters to the radiology market. Another benefit of the Commissure acquisition is an exclusive technology license agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital. Nuance said the Vocada purchase will allow it to broaden the capabilities of its Dictaphone Healthcare services by extending the company’s domain within diagnostic specialties, accelerate revenue growth and help healthcare providers comply with industry time mandates in which critical test results are identified, documented and communicated. Photo: Nuance  McKesson signs agreement to purchase OTN for $575M McKesson has signed a definitive agreement to purchase Oncology Therapeutics Network (OTN), a U.S. distributor of specialty pharmaceuticals, for approximately $575 million, including the assumption of debt. McKesson plans to combine the operations of OTN with the operations of McKesson Specialty.
