Health Imaging & IT – Integrating RIS/PACS for the Enterprise - (Page 1) table of contents Working Smart Healthcare is working smarter—from bettering clinician communication and increasing radiologist and surgeon productivity to improving radiology department workflow and easier physician 3D data manipulation and surgical planning. RIS-centric workflow is one tool that’s allowing healthcare enterprises, not just radiology departments, to work smarter. It’s the gold standard; the benefits are real. For example, Montefiore Medical Center has seen radiologist productivity increases of 20 to 25 percent. Cancer-care stand-out Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center completes about 305,500 imaging studies annually, but also imports images from other facilities. Here, integrating RIS and PACS means one user interface that also includes embedded dictation. Another fiscal challenge that has made radiology smarter is cuts in reimbursement resulting from the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA). Diversifying revenue streams, increasing procedure volume, decreasing staff and upgrading technology are among the strategies working for Radiology and Imaging Specialists of Lakeland, Fla. Scottsdale Medical Imaging is another imaging center group thriving, even in the wake of DRA. A solid IT infrastructure supports RIS-driven RIS/ PACS workflow and 15 percent annual growth, with no increase in radiology staff. Similar efficiency is being gained at Blount Memorial Hospital. The key to finding the right system for them started with cross-disciplinary teamwork and training, IT department involvement and carefully eyeing contract details. The devil may be in the details, but getting them right is smart business. Mary C.
