Health Imaging & IT – Integrating RIS/PACS for the Enterprise - (Page 5) “You can’t have one radiologist speak for the entire group. You really need to look at each specialty because they all work differently.” Mony Weschler, director for ancillary systems, Montefiore Medical Center He recommends establishing a selection committee that includes IT expertise and a range of clinical expertise. “You can’t have one radiologist speak for the entire group. You really need to look at each specialty because they all work differently.” You’ll also need the right representation from the specialty areas that are going to rely on the system, Weschler says. Cardiology and orthopedics jump to mind but “in today’s world, almost every specialty should have some representation.” the last word RIS/PACS is essential in today’s competitive healthcare market, Weschler says. Imaging datasets are getting larger and larger and require a reliable, redundant, responsive system, he says. “Today we deliver clinical systems that deliver business continuity, so that we can deliver tomorrow’s technology today. The way studies are read today already requires advanced 3D capabilities. No radiologist will have the time or the ability to focus and scroll through 8,000 images and try to find a tumor or a nodule. The ability to manipulate multimedia elements and even larger pathology images is next. One needs to keep all this in mind when looking for a new system today. Of course, having a clinically orientated IT staff at your disposal that understands the business model does not hurt.” n tion requires an investment in the proper infrastructure—stateof-the-art workstations that bring up images quickly. “Look at your ORs and your orthopedic suites, don’t forget cardiology and that’s just to get off the ground and running,” Weschler says. When choosing a RIS/PACS, realize that you’re buying an enterprise imaging system, not a radiology system, Weschler says. “If you’re not thinking that way, you really should be. These systems do not live in isolation anymore. Anyone who doesn’t look at the entire picture and everything that these systems affect will inevitably get into trouble.” PRESENTS A FREE WITH PRESENTER Q&A Integrating RIS/PACS for the Enterprise Experts from three leading healthcare enterprises discuss how truly integrated RIS/PACS from a single vendor drives to improve workflow and radiologists access to information and images—and seamlessly pushes patient information to referring providers’ EMR.
