Funway Thailand 2008 - (Page 15) thailand escorted tours in Experience Thailand Starts and ends in Bangkok 2 nights from £199pp Day 1 Bangkok – Damnoen Saduak – Kanchanaburi Depart early from your hotel in Bangkok and travel by road to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, for a chance to see a way of life basically unchanged for centuries. Continue to Kanchanaburi Province to visit the Allied War Cemetery and War Museum, a replica of a prisoner of war camp. Board a train on the Death Railway and travel along the original wooden viaducts. After lunch visit the famous Tiger Temple, which has more than twenty tigers and cubs living within the temple grounds. Overnight at Pung Waan Resort or similar. (L) Day 2 Kanchanaburi – Ayuthaya After breakfast visit the Hellfire Pass Memorial. There are walking trails through the rainforest and a museum dedicated to all Allied prisoners of war who perished during WWII. Continue to the ancient city of Ayuthaya via Suphan Buri. The scenery en route, near the Burmese border, is breathtaking, being dominated by fertile farmland and jungle-clad mountains. Arrive in Ayuthaya and have time at leisure for exploring. Overnight at Krungsri River Hotel or similar. (B, L) Day 3 Ayuthaya – Bang Pa In – Cruise to Bangkok This morning visit to famous temples of Ayuthaya, including Wat Srisanpetch, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol and perhaps Ayuthaya’s most beautiful temples at Wat Chai Watthanaram. Proceed to Bang Pa In, the former summer residence of the Kings of Ayuthaya, built in the 18th century. The Royal Palace is set amidst extensive park grounds and boasts an exotic combination of Thai and European architecture. The Thai pavilion built in the middle of a lake will catch the visitors’ eye, as will the Chinese-style palace Vihat Chamrun. Board a luxury river boat for lunch and take a leisurely cruise down the fabled Chao Phraya River to Bangkok. You’ll arrive at around 5pm and transfer to your chosen Bangkok hotel. (B, L) Northern Thailand Odyssey Starts in Bangkok ends in Chiang Mai 6 nights from £345pp Day 1 Tue Bangkok - Ayutthaya - Lopburi Phitsanuloke An early departure stopping first at Bang Pa In, the former home of the Kings of Ayutthaya, the capital of Siam from 1350 to 1767 and home to historic temples. Then to Lopburi and a visit to Phra Prang Sam Yod, a temple with three towers and impressive ornaments as well as a shrine of the Hindu Goddess Kali at the Sarn Prakarn Temple, followed by lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to Phitsanuloke for an overnight stay at the Topland Hotel (or similar). (L) Day 2 Wed Phitsanuloke- Sukothai- Chiang Rai The journey continues to Sukhothai, the first capital of the Thai Kingdom, which dates back to the 13th century. Considered one of Asia’s most important historical destinations, Old Sukhothai is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visiting the temples Wat Sra Sri and Wat Sri Chim, the excursion continues to Sri Satchanalai. After lunch the day continues with a drive north to Chiang Rai and overnight, for two nights, at the Wiang Inn Hotel (or similar). (B, L) Day 3 Thu Chiang Rai In the morning visit the exotic Akha and Yao hill tribe villages. Drive through beautiful landscapes along the narrow hill roads with beautiful views. Onward then to Mae Sai, the most Northern town in Thailand, situated on the Burmese border. After lunch continue to the infamous ‘Golden Triangle’, the meeting point of Burma, Laos and Thailand, including a visit to the old Opium House, before continuing to the town of Chiang Saen on the scenic borders of the Mekong. Return to Chiang Rai. (B, L) Day 4 Fri Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai Set out for the journey to Mae Ka Chan, a city famed for its hot springs, before continuing through scenic hillsides and jungles to Chiang Mai, a city with a 700 year history. After lunch at a local restaurant drive to the mountain temple Wat Phra Dhat Doi Suthep before continuing to the Chiang Mai Plaza Hotel (or similar), for a two night stay. In the evening experience a traditional ‘Khantoke’ dinner whilst being entertained by elegant Thai dancers. (B, L, D) Day 5 Sat Chiang Mai Steeped in a rich traditional heritage and unique culture, a trip to Chiang Mai is an essential part of any travel itinerary in Thailand. Today a visit to an elephant camp is planned for the early morning to see these majestic beasts at work. Then to visit the Orchid and Butterfly Farm before lunch, followed by shopping at the fascinating handicraft villages at San Kampaeng. (B, L) Day 6 Sun Chiang Mai Depart after breakfast and either transfer to the Chiang Mai Airport for your onward flight, or extend your stay in the city. (B) River Kwai Jungle Rafts Starts and ends in Bangkok 2 nights from £115pp Day 1 Bangkok – Kanchanaburi – River Kwai An early morning departure from your hotel, and journey to Kanchanaburi Province. Visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre Museum, War Cemetery and Bridge over the River Kwai. Take a long tail boat from the pier to the River Kwai Jungle Rafts, passing by unspoiled mountainous jungle scenery. After lunch boat ride downstream to visit the infamous Hellfire Pass Memorial. After dinner there is a presentation of Mon dances. Overnight, two nights, at the River Kwai Jungle Rafts or Resotel. (L, D) Day 02 River Kwai Travel upriver to visit the natural beauty of the Saiyoke Yai Waterfall & National Park. After lunch visit the Lava Cave to explore the fascinating rock formations. The rest of the day is free, at leisure. Optional activities (fee) are available locally include canoeing or mountain biking. (B, L, D) Day 03 River Kwai – Bangkok In the morning visit the nearby ethnic Mon Tribal village, with an optional elephant ride through the bamboo forest. In the afternoon, after leaving the hotel and having lunch at the pier, take a historic ride on the Death Railway Train, through lush forest landscapes. A time perhaps to reflect. Return then to Bangkok and your chosen hotel.
