United Ski 2008 - (Page 9) California Heavenly, Northstar & Squaw Valley Northstar ❆ Squaw ❆ Reno NEVADA ❆ Heavenly San Francisco The Skiing CALIFORNIA Santa Barbara Los Angeles ❄ Tahoe is a rare skiing destination indeed. Spread around the seventy two mile circumference, blue stillness of Lake Tahoe are some seventeen glorious ski resorts, of which the best known are Heavenly, Squaw Valley and Northstar. Rare? Well, be warned, visit once and you’ll want to visit again. Tahoe is more then a skiers’ paradise with every kind of trail you could yearn for, it has everything else too – character, variety and of course, those incredible views… Just an hour’s drive from Reno (and just 32 from San Francisco), Lake Tahoe nestles amidst the massive peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. There are many powder rich resorts around this twenty two mile long lake. Heavenly: This resort boasts Lake Tahoe’s highest elevation, longest vertical drop, majestic views and the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and high speed detachable quad lift, North Bowl Express. Squaw Valley: offers diverse and in general more challenging skiing. There are no less than 4,000 acres of skiing here, spread over six picks. Everything about the place is mega: even the lift system is capable of transporting no less than 49,000 skiers an hour via 30 lifts. Northstar Resort: You will find trails here on the two sides of Mount Pluto, one offering impressively groomed trails and exhilarating skiing through trees, which are heaven sent for intermediate and beginners, whilst the Backside Express quad chair serves 12 black diamond runs, that are often chocked with fresh snow. Families All resorts offer childcare arrangements. Pre-booking is advised. Heavenly: Offers the largest ski school with excellent tuition, also a Kids centre, for children aged 4-13, where the kids can learn how to ski or snowboard in a ‘kids only’ terrain. There is a fully licensed day care facility, which takes children aged 6 weeks to 6 years, making Heavenly the only resort in the area, which day care service accepts infants. Squaw Valley: Offers Children’s World; a supervised 1,200 sq. ft facility for children 2-12 years old. Northstar: At Northstar, Star Kids teach the 5-12 year olds on board or ski, whilst Ski Cubs is for youngsters between 3 and 6. Here you will find some of the best special offers in town, with children under 12 years skiing for free. Out and about Heavenly: This is Las Vegas on ice! Stand in the middle of the road, and on the Nevada side, where gambling is legal, is the lure of casinos and glitzy shows; on the other, California bars and restaurants. Off the slopes you will find bowling, dog sledding, and ice skating and even children’s fun centres at the casinos. Squaw Valley and Northstar: Offer a quieter après ski experience, perfect for families. Tahoe city and Truckee are also nearby and have a large variety of restaurants and bars. ❄ See your travel agent, visit www.unitedvacations.co.uk or call 0844 499 2229 9 http://www.unitedvacations.co.uk
