APA Daily Bulletin - Day 1, 2008 - (Page 5) may 3-4, 2008 The Daily Bulletin 5 saturday / sunday F oundat ion awa rds Four honored for Advancing Minority Mental Health This year’s Advancing Minority Mental Health Award recipients will be recognized at the American Psychiatric Foundation’s annual benefit gala Saturday night, “Windows on Washington.” Recipients include one individual and three nonprofit organizations that are being recognized for their special efforts to increase public awareness of mental health care, increase access to mental health services, and enhance the quality of care for underserved minorities, especially those suffering from severe mental illnesses. This is the fifth year the foundation has given these awards. Winners receive $5,000 in recognition of their work. The awards are made possible through an unrestricted educational grant from Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc. “I congratulate all of the recipients of the Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health,” Foundation President Richard K. Harding, M.D., said. “It is through this award that the foundation recognizes the commendable efforts of individuals and organizations that are making mental health available to people who might not otherwise get these kinds of services.” The foundation is the philanthropic and educational arm of the American Psychiatric Association. The mission of the foundation is to advance understanding that mental illnesses are real and can be effectively treated. The benefit takes place Saturday evening from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Union Station. Lu developed the Ethnic/Minority Psychiatric Inpatient Programs at SFGH and the National Asian American and Pacific Islander Mental Health Association. Homes for the Brave in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is receiving an award for providing housing and services to homeless male veterans and non-veterans struggling with psychiatric and/or substance abuse problems. Homes for the Brave provides case management, vocational education and training, job assistance, and community life skills training. Through its services and collaborations, the organization strives to prepare homeless individuals with the life skills necessary to reenter the world as productive members of society. Housing Works in Brooklyn, New York, is receiving an award for the work it is doing to support homeless and low-income people living with HIV/AIDS and their families. Housing Works administers mental health services that address the needs of triply diagnosed people living with HIV/AIDS, who are also mentally ill, and chemically dependent. Mental health care services are provided for a total of 130 clients per year at three New York licensed AIDS Adult Day Health Care programs. Tristan’s Quest – Support for Kids of Incarcerated Parents (SKIP) Initiative in Greensboro, North Carolina, will be awarded for leading the community to increase awareness of the mental and physical health risks faced by children whose parent(s) are incarcerated. In May 2007, 78 children (85 percent of whom were African American) were attending SKIP groups at eight elementary schools. Award Winners Francis G. Lu, M.D., is receiving an award for his work in the department of psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). Dr. Gala Event Benefits Research, Public Awareness The American Psychiatric Foundation’s annual benefit gala Saturday evening takes place at Union Station, a historic landmark that has played host to 17 U.S. presidents and numerous foreign dignitaries. Physicians have the opportunity to support the philanthropic arm of their profession every year by attending the fundraiser. Tickets are $175 and may be purchased at the foundation’s booth in the APA Member Center or at the door. The gala’s theme this year is “Windows on Washington,” and the proceeds benefits the foundation’s grants, programs, research funding, and awards that advance public understanding of mental illness. The event will take place Saturday, May 4, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., and includes a silent auction and the presentation of the Awards for Advancing Minority Health. Guests will enjoy a menu of fine cuisine and live music. The setting is the East Hall of Union Station.
