APA Daily Bulletin - Day 1, 2008 - (Page 6) saturday / sunday The Daily Bulletin 6 may 3-4, 2008 Scientific Programs, continued from page 1 Advancing Science, Care, and the Profession.” Three presidential symposia supporting the theme will be presented on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons. There will also be numerous scientific presentations related to the theme and invited lecturers to discuss various aspects of psychiatric practice, psychiatric education, and research. While we strive for balance in the program, some timely topics, including post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans, will receive additional attention during the meeting. The National Institutes of Mental Health will also present a research track to share recent findings with the potential to shape the future of psychiatric practice. Another key topic at this meeting will be the interface of psychopharmacology and psychoanalysis and how those two areas of practice really go hand in hand. A good psychiatrist understands the interplay of the various things we do in the field, so we think it’s important to discuss these two principals together. We also want to look at the interface between bedside research and bench research, including the latest developments in these areas and what they mean for the practitioner on a daily basis. Our meeting is the largest, most distinguished psychiatric meeting in the world, which makes it impossible to mention all the wonderful opportunities available here. I recommend that attendees maximize their annual meeting experience by spending some time with the program. To make the most of your time here in Washington, D.C., you’ll want to be familiar with what’s available and plan your day accordingly. I also suggest you branch out in your educational pursuits. Don’t just attend sessions on familiar subjects. I love it when I hear people say “I work in a psychopharm lab, but I went to a couple of lectures on psychoanalysis, and it was really interesting.” That’s what we hope this meeting can do. Welcome to Washington, DC, and the 2008 APA Annual Meeting! International Medical Graduate Institute The inaugural International Medical Graduates (IMG) Institute will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, in Room 150 A/B, Level One of the convention center. This all-day program is intended to facilitate the integration of international medical graduates into their U.S. psychiatry residency experiences. The objectives for the institute: Provide orientation to the American health care system — both clinical and educational. Foster self-awareness about how ethnocultural background influences interactions with patients, teachers, and health care providers. Enhance communication skills essential for physicians. Demonstrate the communication issues in psychiatry, including therapeutic alliance, psychotherapy supervision and feedback, and confidentiality and boundary issues. This program is designed especially for PGY1s entering in July and PGY-2s beginning in July. Faculty for the program includes Raghu Rao, M.D., of Nassau University Medical Center, NY; Allyn Walsh, M.D., of McMaster University, Alberta, Canada; Priyanthy Weerasekera, M.D., M.Ed, FRCPC, of McMaster University; Gerald Whalen, M.D., of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Peter Buckley, M.D., of the Medical College of Georgia. The program costs $295, which includes registration to the APA Annual Meeting, APPI textbooks, course materials, and continental breakfast and lunch. President, continued from page 1 treatment. Joe Merlino, M.D., will chair “Today’s Dynamic Psychotherapy: Not Your Grandparents’ Psychoanalysis.” Additional presidential symposia will focus on women in psychiatry and international issues in policy and care. We also want to address several important, timely topics pertinent to the profession, including the unique mental health needs of our returning veterans and their families. A special presidential institute developed by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry will address practical pediatric psychopharmacology for general psychiatrists as well as for primary care physicians. Other not-to-be missed events during the annual meeting include the Convocation, which will feature a lecture from world-renowned neurologist and author Oliver Sacks, M.D., and the annual Conversations event with actress Patty Duke, who will share her experience in battling mental illness. And don’t forget the “MindGames” competition. This Jeopardy-like contest for residents is a fun learning experience and garners the interest of attendees of all levels. Once again, welcome to my hometown of Washington, DC. I’m pleased to have you here and hope you enjoy the 2008 APA Annual Meeting. http://www.psych.org
