NIMH SCIENTIFIC TRACK SERIES OF SESSIONS PRESENTS The National Institute of Mental Health teamed up with the American Psychiatric Association to offer a special research track, “Psychiatry in the Age of Discovery: Science to Service,” for attendees to the 2008 APA Annual Meeting. This series of educational opportunities includes symposia, workshops, and lectures on some of the latest developments and discoveries in the field of mental health — from basic science to clinical methodology. “Part of our mission is to relieve the burden of mental illness, so what we would like to do is bring the research findings from the research we conduct or fund to the practicing psychiatrists who will actually be working with the patients,” said Mayada Akil, M.D., senior advisor to the director of NIMH. “This is a great opportunity for us to bring what we consider to be exciting research that’s relevant to the clinician to the APA.” One highlight this morning is the symposium “Epigenetic Mechanisms of Depression and Antidepressant Action” at 9:00 a.m. in the Room 145A on Level One of the Washington Convention Center. The investigators in this session will describe findings about elements — either in the environment or medications — that can change genetic materials that are related to depression. “This is one session on the basic science end of the spectrum that is very interesting, and I think the findings are very promising,” Dr. Akil said. This afternoon, one NIMH symposium focuses on adolescent psychopharmacology. The symposium begins at 2:00 p.m. in room 145B on Level One of the Washington Convention Center and will address the latest fi ndings in LATEST MENTAL HEALTH DATA adolescent psychiatry, including an analysis of the safety of pharmacology in adolescents with major depressive disorder and long-term use of stimulants in children with ADHD. The research track also includes research with immediate practical applications, such as interventions for post-traumatic stress disorder that work in day-to-day settings. “Treating PTSD in a Violent World” takes place at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday in Room 145B on Level One of the Washington Convention Center. The plenary lectures today and tomorrow will review major developments in psychiatry. This morning Helen Mayberg, M.D., will discuss “How Neuroimaging has Changed our View of Depression,” and Husseini Manji, M.D., will discuss the genes that contribute to severe mood disorders in his lecture, “Cellular Plasticity Cascades: Genes to Behavior Pathways in the Pathophysiology and Treatment of Severe Mood Disorders.” On Tuesday, Thomas Insel, M.D., director of NIMH, will present “Rethinking Mental Disorders: How Research Will Change Practice.” NIMH Track Monday 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Epigenetic Mechanisms of Depression and Antidepressant Action 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Psychiatric Genetics: New Discoveries Knocking at the Clinic Door 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Continuation Treatments to Prevent Relapse Following ECT 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Safety Issues in Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology: Research Update and Clinical Implications for Practice 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. The Application of Translational Affective Neuroscience too the Understanding of Anxiety Disorders 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Cardiometabolic Risk During Treatment with Antipsychotic Medications Soledad by Astrid Rusquellas, M.D., of Berkeley, California, is just one of the many beautiful works of art on display at the APA Art Association exhibit. Dr. Robinowitz encourages continued advocacy on behalf of the profession, patients Excerpts from the APA President’s speech highlight past year’s successes Carolyn B. Robinowitz, M.D. President, American Psychiatric Association It is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to Washington, D.C., my hometown, as well as to the 161st Annual Meeting. It has been a privilege to serve you and our association this year. I have been fortunate to work with such a wonderful team of leaders, particularly our energetic and active immediate past president, mi hermano, Pedro Ruiz, M.D., our creative and focused president-elect, Nada L. Stotland, M.D. and our speaker, Jeff Akaka, M.D., who defines, lives, and breathes advocacy. This wonderful meeting program has been chaired by David Baron, M.D., whom I have known and admired for many years. The program reflects David’s expertise in adult education in addition to science, as well as the diligence of the Scientific Program Committee in developing outstanding sessions in a multitude of learning formats designed to help psychiatrists help patients. I also want to express special gratitude to Thomas Insel, M.D., director of the NIMH, and his staff, especially Dr. Akil, for terrific leadership in creating the NIMH track and ensuring the participation of marvelous scientists throughout the program. I have been touched and gratified this year by See Robinowitz, page 6
