APA Daily Bulletin - Day 2, 2008 - (Page 4) Monday The Daily BULLETIN 4 May 5, 2008 SPORTS PSYCHIATRY Professional athletes to share their experiences with psychopharmaceuticals This afternoon, three professional athletes will join three sports psychiatry experts for a compelling symposium. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. today, attendees will hear alternating stories from the athletes with brief introductions from expert clinicians. The session, “Psychopharmacology in the Athlete,” takes place in Room 147B on Level One of the convention center. Presenter and chair, Antonia L. Baum, M.D., said the athletes will be the prominent speakers during the session. “I want them to tell their stories,” she said. “The athletes’ stories are compelling and we’re so grateful that they share them. These stories are very personal, and a lot of time they face stigma in their professions, so it takes real courage to share their stories.” Dr. Baum, who will present “Lithium in the Athlete,” will provide a brief introduction and background for Lucinda Cattermole, an Ironman Triathlete. Dr. Baum said she hopes the session provides other physicians interested in sports psychiatry with a better perspective on the affect psychiatric disorders and psychotropic medications can have on an athlete. As part of the discussion, attendees will learn about the potential side effects and special considerations needed when an athlete takes a medication such as lithium. “We will show that the common assumption — that lithium toxicity is likely to occur Antonia L. Baum, M.D., with daughter Ava Ferrell. Come Visit Us at APA—Pfizer Booth 1236 with physical exertion — is not the rule,” Dr. Baum said. “Given the potential therapeutic potency of lithium, it behooves us to consider the possibility of using lithium, even in the elite athlete.” Douglas L. Geenens, D.O., and Daniel Alford, a professional football player, will then discuss “The Use of Neuroleptic Medication in Professional Athletes.” Alford, formerly an offensive lineman for the New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and St. Louis Rams, was able to continue his career after being successfully treated for bipolar disorder with ziprasidone and will share his experience. Dr. Geenens said professional athletes require special considerations when prescribing psychiatric medications. He will discuss the rationale for use of antipsychotic medications and their impact on performance and cognition. The final portion of the symposium, “PsychoStimulant Use During Athletic Competition: What are the Risks and Benefits?” will be presented by David O. Conant-Norville, M.D., and Major Leaguer Jim Daniel. Daniel has played for the Kansas City Royals and the Baltimore Orioles. The use of psycho-stimulant medication is the first line treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet is banned for use by athletes during competition by many sport-governing organizations. During this portion of the symposium, Dr. Conant-Norvill will review the history leading to restrictions of psycho-stimulant use in sports, the potential risks to the athletes, and the data suggesting a possible performanceenhancement effect. Specific rules banning psycho-stimulant use in various amateur and professional sport organizations will be discussed as well as procedures to obtain therapeutic use exemptions for athletes with medically legitimate reasons for using these agents during competition. Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis treated with atypical antipsychotic drugs are at an increased risk of death compared to placebo. GEODON is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis. Please see brief summary of prescribing information on adjacent page.
