APA Daily Bulletin - Day 2, 2008 - (Page 8) Monday The Daily BULLETIN 8 May 5, 2008 Examining ties between APA, pharmaceutical industry The American Psychiatric Association has always been concerned with how the profession views the relationship between the Annual Meeting and the pharmaceutical industry. For that reason, industry-supported educational events receive thorough scrutiny to ensure these events remain balanced and unbiased. However, despite these efforts, questions remain — even among leaders of the association — about where education ends and marketing begins. To address these questions and spur discussion about this topic, several APA leaders developed a special symposium that will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Room 201 on Level Two of the convention center. Chair Kenneth R. Silk, M.D., said the symposium, “The Relationships Between the APA Annual Meeting and the Pharmaceutical Industry: Historical and Current Perspectives and Issues,” came about when he posed the question “Where does the education end and the marketing begin?” “I thought, if I’m not sure, I doubt attendees can tell,” Dr. Silk said. Dr. Silk said there are many places that the pharmaceutical industry touches the Annual Meeting, including educational functions such as industry-supported symposia and posters. He said he hopes tomorrow’s session spurs discussion about these relationships and answers questions for attendees who want to know more about the relationship between the meeting and the pharmaceutical companies. “Obviously industry support is needed to continue to offer top-quality education at an affordable price, but attendees need to be educated about how the APA scrutinizes educational offerings so they understand the separation between marketing and education.” The symposium will feature presentations by notable speakers, including Scientific Program Committee Chair David A. Baron, MS.Ed, D.O., and James H. Scully Jr., M.D., the APA’s medical director/CEO. Following the presentations, several discussants will lead a dialogue about the issues raised. There will also be 25 minutes at the end of the session for questions.
