APA Daily Bulletin - Day 3, 2008 - (Page 4) Tuesday The Daily BULLETIN 4 May 6, 2008 HE ALTH IT Sessions to provoke discussion on benefits, risks of technology Beginning at noon today, APA attendees interested in how the adoption of information technology will affect the psychiatry profession have an opportunity to find out. Forum 10, “Ready or Not — Coming to a Desktop Near You: Psychiatry and Information Technology,” is just one of the sessions taking place during the annual meeting that will address this timely topic. The forum will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 146C on Level One of the convention center. Psychiatrist and chair of the forum Robert Kolodner, M.D., national coordinator for health information technology in the Department of Health and Human Services, said he and his fellow panelists will address the risks and benefits of using health information technology for the treatment of psychiatric patients. “The use of electronic health records today is really pretty low,” Dr. Kolodner said. “Only about 14 percent of all U.S. physicians currently use this technology, and that number is likely much lower among many specialties, including psychiatry.” Given that the country is undertaking a major national initiative to improve the quality and safety of health care, Dr. Kolodner said it’s important for the profession to understand the advantages and challenges of electronic health records (EHRs). He said he hope this forum introduces physicians unfamiliar with EHRs to the technology so they see the potential for improving care with its use. He said he also hopes existing users come away with more information on how to best optimize their systems and reap the most benefits. Presenting during the forum: Steven Altchuler, M.D.; Karen Bell, M.D.; John Boronow, M.D.; and Sarah Wattenberg, M.S.W. Dr. Kolodner will also participate in Symposia 69, “Privacy and Fraud Policies and Electronic Health Records,” which takes places Wednesday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Room 154 A/B on Level One of the convention center. The symposia, chaired and organized by Zebulon Taintor, M.D., will include presentation by several experts who will address some of the concerns related to health information technology. Dr. Kolodner’s presentation, “National Health IT Agenda: Privacy and Security,” will provide insight into what’s happening on a national level to upgrade technology in the U.S. health care system. “This symposia offers a number of speakers with differing backgrounds and should provoke thoughtful discussion,” Dr. Kolodner said. He said some physicians believe the risks to patient privacy are not worth moving toward increased use of EHRs, but others believe there are effective means to protect information and patients should have the choice as to whether their information is exchanged responsibly. “I hope for a good, robust discussion with a lot of audience interaction,” he said. “The important thing is that psychiatric patients deserve the best quality of care we can give. Without help from technology, it is virtually impossible to keep up with the vast array of information available to help us make the best treatment decisions. These tools can help us provide better care.” Other talks during the symposia: “Model Anti-Fraud Requirements for Electronic Health Records” by Colleen McCue, Ph.D. “Privacy and Electronic Health Records” by Deborah C. Peel, M.D. “Psychiatric Health Records as Sensitive Information” by Mark A. Rothstein, J.D. “What the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology Might Do” by Zebulon Taintor, M.D. He wrote the book. Now he’s signing it. Meet Dr Stephen M.
