New Practices. • AUA DAILY NEWS • PREVIEW AUA Practice Guidelines Committee hard at work in Orlando THE AUA PR ACTICE GUIDELINES Committee (PGC) will meet in Orlando at the AUA Annual Meeting to discuss several new and important activities that have occurred relative to the Guidelines Department. The PGC will assess the innovative guidelines processes that are being used in the development of the renal mass guideline. These exciting new processes have led to improved methodological transparency, less time for guideline T development and a substantial reduction in the cost of guideline production. Also, the PGC will review suggested guidelines topics obtained directly from members through the new web-based topic solicitation process that AUA instituted in February. In addition, PGC members will review a document that clearly differentiates among official AUA documents and defines the following terms: guideline, best practice statement, policy, consensus statement, technology assessment and white paper. These terms are often misused or used interchangeably by the AUA. By defining these terms using specific criteria (level of evidence, type of expert opinion, development process and scope/length of the document), all audiences will have a much greater appreciation of the process used in the development of each document, as well as a clearer understanding of the use of the terms. Several guideline panels will convene at the AUA Annual Meeting to discuss BPH, small renal mass and vasectomy guidelines. Vasec- tomy is a new guideline topic and the panel will meet for the first time in Orlando. Finally, Dr. Roger Dmochowski will address the plenary session on his 3-year tenure as Chair of the PGC. He has been instrumental in several of the impressive improvements in guideline development and also in collaborating with the European Association of Urology in formulating the ureteral stones guideline, which was the first guideline developed jointly by the AUA and EAU. ‘Member Get A Member’ drawing to be held at Annual Meeting T H E DR AW I NG FOR T H E M E M BE R AUA JOBFAIR THE AUA JOBFAIR WILL BE HELD in conjunction with the AUA Annual Meeting, May 17-20, 2008, in Exhibit Hall WC at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. UROPAC: Urology’s lifeline to Congress U UROPAC, UROLOGY’S POLITICAL action committee, is committed to helping urology-friendly candidates gain a solid presence in Congress. UROPAC strives to ensure that finding real solutions to vital urology challenges remains a priority on Capitol Hill. Top priority UROPAC issues include: physician payment cut, scheduled to start July 1, 2008 • Blocking new attacks on ownership and use of in-office diagnostic imaging technologies, including MRI, CT and ultrasound • Applying a reasonable approach to quality and pay-for-performance initiatives In 2007 UROPAC successfully prevented passage of a restrictive ultrasound imaging accreditation program. Without UROPAC’s • Resolving the impending 10.5% Medicare support of congressional champions through critical end-of-year fundraisers, there is a real possibility that ultrasound accreditation would be law. Victorious efforts like these are only possible when urologists are fully engaged to make our collective voice heard loud and clear with policymakers. Building trust and committed relationships with congressional representatives through UROPAC support and other advocacy efforts is a sound investment to protect urology’s future. We welcome all UROPAC members to attend a special reception on Monday, May 19, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Butler Room at the Peabody Hotel. Please visit the UROPAC booth to get involved and learn more about UROPAC activities and the reception.
