Heart Rhythm Daily - Day 1, 2008 - (Page 1) D A I LY HIGHLIGHTS M AY 1 4 – 1 5 , 2 0 0 8 Wednesday, May 14 1 E D U C AT I O N Program looks to the future, caters to broad interests of attendees THE 2008 SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS PROGRAM COMMITTEE OF the Heart Rhythm Society worked diligently during the past year to bring together a program that includes internationally known experts and the latest advances in research and technology in arrhythmia management. “I am very excited that we’ve brought together nearly 1,000 speakers for more than 200 educational sessions,” said Richard Page, MD, FHRS, Chair of the 2008 Program Committee. “This meeting will advance our profession by bringing together experts in scientific research and clinical practice from across the country and around the world.” While this year’s main focus is the future of the field, the curricula are varied to allow heart rhythm professionals to choose the tracks that suit their interests, including tracks on heart failure, noninvasive evaluation, devices, and health policy, among others. The Society’s 29th Annual Scientific Sessions begins with an exciting Opening Plenary Session featuring Elizabeth Nabel, MD, Director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health, and the induction of the 2008 Class of Fellows. Dr. Page said some of the highlights of this year’s program include the AF Summit Update, Translational Electrophysiology Sessions and Abstracts Plus. The AF Summit Update builds on the information presented at last year’s soldout AF Summit, a session that spanned two days and featured presentations Richard Page, MD, FHRS from renowned clinicians in atrial fibrillation. The update takes place on Thursday and features three 90-minute sessions: • AF Mechanisms and Mechanism-Based Therapy; • AF Ablation – Clinical Outcomes; and •New Generation Imaging for Ablative Interventions. The meeting’s top abstract on AF will also be featured during the AF Summit Update. “We are building on the success of the Society’s AF 360° initiative,” Dr. Page said. “Attendees can also follow the AF Trail, which was developed to provide AF-related education across a variety of session tracks.” The Translational EP Sessions take place Thursday through Saturday in 90-minute increments bringing together clinicians Cardiac specialists from around the world have descended on San Francisco and scientists along with a selected expert to attend educational sessions during Heart Rhythm 2008. The theme, “Gateway to the Future,” is emblematic of our commitment to the educational needs of clinically oriented physicians, basic scientists, and allied professionals. We are indebted to Richard Page, MD, FHRS, Chair of the Program Committee; Douglas L. Packer, MD, FHRS, Chair of the Abstracts Committee; and the Program Committee for a superb educational program. The Heart Rhythm Society is committed to leading the field of heart rhythm disorders and ultimately improving patient outcomes. In addition to meeting educational needs and providing clinical guidelines, it advocates on behalf of members in the areas of health policy and reimbursement. The Society Bruce Lindsay, MD, has also been at the forefront of supporting legislation for FHRS prevention of sudden cardiac arrest. These efforts focus on educating patients and primary care physicians for risk assessment and prevention of sudden death, expanded access to automatic external defibrillators in public areas, and support for additional funding of research. Our expanded presence on Capitol Hill is truly beneficial to members and non-members alike. In some instances, the Heart Rhythm Society works collaboratively with industry to serve the interests of our members and their patients.
