The presentations and judging take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today in Room 220 of the Moscone Center. Each investigator has 20 minutes to present their work, followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer session with the judges and audience members. All six finalists received grants for their travel expenses and registration costs for Heart Rhythm 2008. Today’s winners will receive $1,000 cash prizes. The Young Investigators Awards are now in their 27th year. They are designed to recognize and encourage the research of young investigators and the institutions where they work and study. The competition is open to any physician or scientist who is currently in a residency, fellowship or doctoral training program, or who has been in such a program in the past three years. The competition is also open to students in graduate school or medical school who are working on a problem concerned with cardiac pacing or electrophysiology. The six finalists were selected by the Young Investigators Award Sub-committee of the Scientific Sessions Program Committee, led by Chair Peng-Sheng Chen, MD, FHRS. The committee is comprised of senior researchers, clinicians, and scientists who review all entries and select the six who will present their cases at the annual meeting. The 2008 finalists in the basic research category are: • Mihail G. Chelu, MD, PhD, from Baylor College of Medicine with “Camkii Phosphorylation of Defective Ryr2 Predisposes to Atrial Fibrillation.” • Samvit Tandan, BA, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas with “Physical and Functional Interaction between Calcineurin and the Cardiac L-type Ca2+ Channel.” • Aravindan Kolandaivelu, MD, DDS, from Johns Hopkins with “Non-invasive Monitoring of Tissue Heating during Cardiac RF Ablation is Possible Using MRI Thermography.” The 2008 finalists in the clinical research category are: • Thomas Rostock, MD, from the University Hospital Eppendorf, Department of Cardiology in Hamburg, Germany with “Atrial Fibrillation Begets Atrial Fibrillation in the Pulmonary Veins — Electrophysiological Alterations of the PVs and the Atria in Response to New-onset AF in Humans.” • Kurt C. Roberts-Thomson, MBBS, from Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Australia with “The Role of Chronic Atrial Stretch and Atrial Fibrillation on Posterior Left Atrial Conduction in Humans.” • Daniel Scherr, MD, from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with “Investigation of Temporal Stability of Complex Fractionated Atrial Electrograms during Atrial Fibrillation in Human Left Atrium.” One winner will be selected from each category and announced by Dr. Chen at the President’s Reception, which takes place this evening from 6:15 to 7:45 pm. The Young Investigators Awards are supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Medtronic, Inc. Don’t Miss Any Sessions – Visit Rhythm Row One of the many new features at this year’s meeting is Rhythm Row — a lounge with flat screen televisions, refreshments, headphones and educational sessions on tap that allow attendees to watch sessions that are going on at the same time or may be full. “In an increasingly tech thirsty climate, we can provide attendees with a new way to experience as many sessions as possible,” said Charlie Jones, vice president of marketing, communications and membership for the Heart Rhythm Society. “It gives everyone the ability to sort of channel-surf the conference and not miss a minute of cutting-edge information that is most important to them.” There are two Rhythm Row locations, one in the Upper Lobby, South Building, supported by Medtronic, Inc. The second, supported by Boston Scientific, is located in the Lower Lobby, North Building.
