Heart Rhythm Daily - Day 3, 2008 - (Page 10) M A Y 1 7, 2 0 0 8 10 S AT U R DAY SCA 360° Multi-year initiative puts focus on sudden cardiac arrest While the Heart Rhythm Society’s mission of improving patient care by promoting research, education and health care policies remains the focus of its work, the Society has set out on a new course in how it delivers services. The 360° approach looks at heart rhythm disorders from various perspectives to develop innovative programs that not only meet the needs of its members, but also advance the field of electrophysiology. With 360°, the Society has embarked on a long-term, comprehensive commitment to put its mission into action through a series of initiatives focused on three key heart rhythm disorders: Atrial Fibrillation (AF 360°), Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA 360°) and Heart Failure (HF 360°). “SCA is a serious health issue that claims more than 250,000 lives per year,” said John DiMarco, MD, PhD, FHRS, chair of the Society’s SCA 360° Task Force. “Therefore, it is imperative that we tackle the issue from the provider, patient and health policy perspectives.” In order to develop the most effective initiatives, the Society conducted in-depth research. These included a series of focus groups and one-on-one interviews with member and non-member clinicians to better understand their needs related to SCA information, education and programming. management of patients with ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation from world-renowned faculty.” In addition to the VT/VF Summit, SCA 360° unveiled a number of new patient education materials including brochures and other resources for clinicians. These new materials are available at Heart Rhythm Place and will be available for order on the Society’s website. “SCA 360° is a long-term commitment and members can expect to see advanced professional education, additional patient resources and health policy activities over the next several months and even years,” DiMarco added. The Society is currently developing an online resource center which will offer a convenient and comprehensive set of education, tools and other resources in one central online location. It will include downloadable patient education materials, the latest information on professional education opportunities related to SCA, clinical and scientific documents, updates on the Society’s health policy initiatives, and more. — John DiMarco, MD, PhD, FHRS “After months of planning, SCA 360° officially launched here at Heart Rhythm 2008,” DiMarco said. “The VT/VF Summit was an overwhelming success and more than 1,000 attendees learned about the latest advances in the diagnosis and Think First.
