With that, 2008 has been a busy year for the Foundation as it undertakes a restructuring and revised mission. The Foundation’s new mission is to enhance the prevention and treatment of cardiac rhythm disorders by supporting the research, education, and advocacy efforts of the Heart Rhythm Society. The Foundation’s goal is to promote a culture of giving in service to this mission. The Foundation was also pleased to see its Director of Donor Relations, Betsy Bougess Bogdansky, honored for her 25 years of service to the Society during the President’s Reception last night (see story, page 3). The Advanced Ablation Course takes place Oct. 4-7 in San Diego, and is designed for those new to the field as well as veteran professionals. “This course gives the participants that chance to be up front at a very interactive session where the very latest techniques, technologies, and understanding of physiology come together all at the same place at the same time,” said Douglas L. Packer, MD, FHRS, Abstract Chair of the Scientific Program Committee. The three-and-a-half day course is primarily conducted in interactive, casebased discussions, although there will be didactic sessions as well. Dr. Packer said the goal is to provide a basis of information for those interventionalists who are just getting started and then build on that with the latest information available in the field. “If we understand the arrhythmia; if we S AV E T H E DAT E FO R FALL COUR SES Board Review Course SEPTEMBER 24–27, 2008 Chicago understand the anatomy; the pathophysiology; it’s going to lead to a more straightforward approach to the patients with tougher arrhythmias,” Dr. Packer said. “This course focuses on techniques and building blocks that one needs to deal with those arrhythmias at a higher level.” The first day of the course will review the basics of ablation, including presentations on SVTs, AV node re-entry, atrial tachycardia, and VT ablation. The second day goes in-depth into the anatomy, physiology and the approach to ablating SVT and atrial tachycardia, as well as ablating patients with congenital heart disease. Throughout the course, practitioners can also choose their course of study. “There will be break-out sessions featuring fundamental and more difficult cases. So those at an entry level will choose from the 101- or 201-level classes, and the seasoned veterans will choose from more difficult level ses- Advanced Ablation Course OCTOBER 4–7, 2008 San Diego sions,” Dr. Packer said. Also this fall, the Society will offer heart rhythm specialists the opportunity to complete a module required for the American Board of Internal Medicine clinical cardiac electrophysiology certification exam during a review course this September. The ABIM requires physicians to complete 100 cumulative points in the Maintenance of Certification Program (MOC) before taking the recertification exams in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Through an agreement with ABIM, physicians can complete one module in this review session and submit it for credit. The Board Review Course will also c over t he c ontent a rea s f rom t he exam in an in-depth review with expert faculty, who have served on the A BIM CCEP test-writing committee.
