International Stroke Conference 2008 Preview - (Page 4) iSc Preview | New Orleans 4 Late-breaking abstract session will showcase important findings each year, the ISc Program Committee gives investigators of large, important clinical trials and epidemiologic studies extra time to submit their abstracts for presentation at the meeting and then groups the abstracts into a single session at the end of the meeting called “Late-Breaking Science Oral Abstracts.” This year’s late-breaking abstract session, which will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in Hall B2, will showcase the results of six major studies—EPITHET, CHHIPS, INTERACT, the Penumbra Stroke Trial, a CADASIL drug trial, and a study of a genetic screen for intracranial aneurysm. “The late-breaking session is a very specia l session because it featu res, generally speaking, clinical trials and large epidemiologic studies that bring important information to the clinical treatment puzzle,” said Program Committee Chair and session co-moderator Philip Gorelick, MD, MPH, FACP. “Overall, the session presents large, randomized clinical trials and large epidemiologic studies that bring key patient care information to practitioners and clinical research scientists. We reserve this session for the most powerful studies that will influence treatment and research,” added Dr. Gorelick, Professor and Head of the Department Neurology and Rehabilitation and Director of the Center for Stroke Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “The information presented in this session is also a big media draw. We arrange a special news conference dedicated to media interaction with the investigators of these studies prior to the presentation of abstracts. The media have a special opportunity to query the investigators about what the studies mean and their impact,” Dr. Gorelick noted. “Afterwards, expert clinicians and researchers from the American Stroke Association a re made ava i lable to comment on the studies to help give the media further perspective on what it all means. There is usually a flurry of media activity right after the session to get the information to press very quickly to alert laypersons and the scientific community of the results,” he explained. Abstracts for the late-breaking session are due several months after abstract submissions for the rest of the conference are due. “We give the investigators additional time to complete their work. We wish to present the very latest results,” Dr. Gorelick said. “The ISC Program Committee has a special selection process for these abstracts. Dr. Hurn and I, and the section chairs and co-chairs, made the final selection.” The late-brea k i ng stud ies to be presented are: • The Echoplanar Imaging Thrombolytic Evaluation Trial (EPITHET) of the effects of tPA beyond three hours on infarct growth, reperfusion, and clinical outcomes • The Control of Hypertension and Hypotension Immediately Post-Stroke (CHHIPS) pilot trial • The results of the vanguard phase of the Intensive Blood Pressure Reduction in Acute Cerebral Hemorrhage Trial (INTERACT) • The Penumbra Stroke Trial of the safety and effectiveness of a new generation of mechanical devices for clot removal in acute ischemic stroke • A randomized, double-blind trial of donepezil in the treatment of subcortical vascular cognitive impairment in patients with cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) • Results of a study among 333 multiplex 1A families of a genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) linkage screen for intracranial aneurysm susceptibility genes.
