Stokes Professor of Law and Anthropology Email: nsinger@law.ua.edu Phone: 205-348-1135 Expertise: Statutory Interpretation, Anthropology & the Law Professor Singer received his B.S. in 1960 from the University of Pennsylvania, his J.D. in 1964 from Boston University, and his S.J.D. in 1975 from Harvard University. He served as editor of the Boston University Law Review, was on the editorial board of African Law Studies, and was the case editor for the Journal of Ethiopian Law. Professor Singer was named professor of law at The University of Alabama in 1977 and professor of anthropology in 1978. He then became the Charles O. Stokes Professor of Law and Anthropology in 1993. He is also a member of the board of the Center for Economic Research in Africa. Professor Singer has served as a graduate fellow at Harvard, a research fellow at Yale University; an assistant professor and visiting scholar at Haile Selassie I University (now known as Addis Ababa University); a visiting scholar at the Institute of Comparative Law in Belgrade, Yugoslavia; and a visiting professor at the University of Khartoum. Recently, Professor Singer began the publication of the 7th edition of his treatise on statutory interpretation. He was also appointed to serve as patron and honorary editor for the Mizan Law Journal, published by the St. Mary University School of Law in Ethiopia. He participates in international activities with the United Nations Development Program, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, Land Tenure Center of the University of Wisconsin, and Terra Institute. He was an associate with the Washington, D.C. law firm of Arnold & Porter until 1980. From 19801981, he was a law clerk for the Honorable Gerald Bard Tjoflat of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. After his clerkship, he practiced law in Atlanta. Professor Stein has been quoted extensively in national media outlets including NPR, Good Morning America, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner, The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, and BusinessWeek. He is a member of the advisory panel of the BNA Pension Reporter, has served as counsel to the American Association of Retired Persons in several pension cases, was a consultant to the General Accounting Office, and taught in the IRS General Counsel’s Continuing Education Program. He has also testified before Congress on pension issues, and served as chair for both the Employee Benefit Section of the Association of American Law Schools and the Teaching Employee BenefitsSubcommittee of the American Bar Association.
