In 1980, Dean Emens joined the Law School’s clinical program as deputy director. He served as the director from 1983 to 1997. As an expert in clinical education, he has repeatedly been a member of ABA accreditation teams. Dean Emens has served on the board of directors of the Association of Continuing Legal Education Administrators. In 1984, he began serving as director of the Alabama Bar Institute for Continuing Legal Education. Dean Emens is on the faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, the faculty of the Legal Services Corporation’s National Training Program, and is a member of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Trial Academy. In 1987, he joined the faculty at UCLA as a lecturer in law and co-directed the UCLA law school’s Academic Support Program. While in California, Professor Fair served as commissioner of the California State Bar Commission on Minority Access to the Legal Profession and as a public counsel legal services volunteer. He has been quoted extensively in several national publications, including The Washington Post and Time, and has appeared on “The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.” He contributes frequently to NPR’s “Justice Talking” blog.
