CU Dental 2018 - 2

FROM THE DEAN

DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS,
Happy 2018 to you! As we embrace the opportunities
and promise of a new year, in this issue we highlight the
CU School of Dental Medicine's proud history of, and new
commitments to, community service. The communities we
serve around Colorado and the world continue to impact
our education, research and clinical care missions.
We have a new department within our school, the
Department of Community Dentistry and Population Health
(formerly the Applied Dentistry Department), that is home
to a growing list of community collaborations and new
student experiential learning activities you will read about.
Affiliated with this department is our interprofessional
Center for Oral Disease Prevention and Population Health
Thank you for your
Research, or COPPR. COPPR provides an infrastructure to
unique contributions to the
support innovative community engagements funded by our
CU legacy of commitment
foundation partners and research that improves the health
to community...
of the communities we are privileged to serve.
While CU Dental's Advanced Clinical Training and
Service (ACTS) Program is entering its thirty-second year,
its "life-changing" impact is as important to today's students as to the alumni highlighted in this
issue. Initiated in 1986, the ACTS Program has been a national model of service learning that
places our students in underserved communities around Colorado. Not only are the rotations
incredibly important to providing students with opportunities to perform person-centered care,
these experiences also instill in CU graduates the desire to give back. More than 46% of the over
70 community dentists who serve as ACTS preceptors are CU Dental alumni.
As you read about just a few of our dental, dental hygiene, general practice residency and
dental specialty program alumni who are making a difference in communities near and far, I hope
you will be as inspired as I am by their stories. Please take the opportunity to nominate a colleague
for the CU Dental Distinguished Alumni Award that will be presented as part of Alumni Weekend on
May 18, 2018. Join us on that day to connect with friends and share your personal story of service.
Thank you for your unique contributions to the CU legacy of commitment to community and all
you do to support the School of Dental Medicine.

Fond regards,

Dr. Denise Kassebaum
