neWs neWs Commencement 2012 On a windy day in May, nearly 200 students graduated from the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences – the largest class ever! One hundred and ninety doctor of pharmacy degrees were conferred on 41 graduates from the non-traditional program and 149 from the school’s traditional pharmacy program. In addition, three doctor of philosophy degrees were conferred. The following special section highlights our recent graduates and uncovers the depth and breadth of our students and the future of pharmacy. Celebrating Excellence Every year during commencement exercises, faculty members from each school and college are singled out by students for teaching excellence. This year’s recipients of the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the Chancellor’s Teaching Recognition Award were Drs. Doug Fish and Connie Valdez, respectively. The President’s Excellence in Teaching Award is an acknowledgement of a faculty member’s outstanding, innovative, and inspirational contributions to the students’ professional development and is awarded by the senior class. The Chancellor’s Teaching Recognition Award is bestowed for demonstrated commitment to providing students a high quality learning experience and is awarded by the student governance group. In addition to the teaching awards, the students elect preceptors in the community to receive awards during the Commencement and Awards Banquet the night before graduation. This year’s Preceptor of the Year Award Recipients were Dr. Scott Mueller and Dr. Benjamin Ferree. Dr. Mueller was recognized as the Institutional Preceptor of the Year. One of the students who nominated Dr. Mueller stated, “Dr. Mueller provided me with an exceptional experience in the intensive care unit. He seemed genuinely interested in helping me become a proficient practitioner and dedicated both time and effort into ensuring that the time spent on the rotation was utilized to the greatest extent.” Drs. Doug Fish and Connie Valdez, recipients of teaching awards, impart words of wisdom during commencement Recognized as the Ambulatory Preceptor of the Year, Dr. Ferree is a community pharmacist in Limon, Colo. Students who spent time with him while on rotation described him as a “great educator, mentor and preceptor who prompted us with pop quizzes to help us learn and keep up to date on information pertinent to the practice.” 6 CU Ska g g s School of Phar m acy and Phar m ace ut i cal S c i e n c e s
