IN THE NEWS

ROBERT VALUCK (PhD)
Was quoted in a 5280 article,
"Sometimes You Have to Build a
Wall Around Your Heart," about the
role of health-care providers in the
rising number of opiate addictions
in the U.S.. During the first wave
of opioid drug users, physicians
would write prescriptions for pain
medication for their patients in
withdrawals, and patients became
dependent on those medications.
When private insurers started to
crack down on prescription abuse,
prices went up on the black market, and according to Valuck, this
left thousands of people across
Colorado ripe for heroin addiction.

PETER RICE (PharmD, PhD)
Appeared in a 9 News story about
hospitals making their own sodium
bicarbonate in response to a
national shortage. Complicating
matters are the facts that sodium
bicarbonate made by one hospital
cannot be used in another, any
sodium bicarbonate created needs
to be tested before it is used, and
making small batches is more
expensive for hospitals in the long
run. Hospitals use the sterile form
of baking soda-a sodium bicarbonate solution, which has baking
soda as its base ingredient-in
vital situations including heart surgery and other emergency events.

trials testing the effectiveness of
marijuana in treating neurological
conditions. The television piece
tells the story of Emmanuel and
Tracy Garza and their two-year
old daughter, Madelynn, who
suffers from regular seizures due
to a rare disorder called Aicardi
Syndrome, which is the absence
of the tissue that connects the
left and right halves of the brain.
Since moving to Colorado to try to
treat Madelyn with cannabis oil,
her seizures have improved. In the
piece, Bainbridge warns of the importance of medical supervision
while using CBD oil.

CINDY O'BRYANT (PharmD)
Was quoted in a Denver Post
article about the effectiveness of
cannabis in killing cancer cells.
According to O'Bryant, though
cannabis appears to affect cancer
cells and not normal cells, little is
known about how well cannabis
fights cancer, as studies up to this
point have been in the lab and not
in human bodies.

and his fellow researchers Laura
Saba, and Paula Hoffman (PhD)
found that different sets of genes
seem to influence levels of alcohol
consumption, such that people
predisposed to drinking large
amounts of alcohol may not have
the genes that predispose them to
alcohol dependency.

DAN LABARBERA (PhD)
Was interviewed by Colorado
Public Radio and other media
outlets regarding a study he led in
collaboration with UC San Diego
on a common southwest desert
shrub that could hold the answer for
treating some lethal infections. Read
more about the study on page 6.
