University of Florida - IFAS Annual Report 2007 - (Page 3) IFAS Annual Report 2007 tomorrow’s Workforce for the Agricultural and the life Sciences The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences has a tradition of excellence in academic programs in the agricultural sciences. Recent program additions and growth areas in the life sciences will meet the future needs of Florida’s workforce. A growing emphasis on biotechnology is reflected in programs in plant and animal cellular and molecular biology as well as in the biotechnology specializations in the new biology major and the plant science major. Family, youth and community sciences is the college’s fastest growing undergraduate major, and food science and human nutrition is the college’s largest undergraduate degree program. Students interested in careers in the health professions obtain excellent preprofessional preparation in a wide variety of biological sciences majors. The Doctor of Plant Medicine program is a unique opportunity for students to learn to diagnose and treat plant diseases as well as identify mechanisms to control invasive species. Minors in leadership and in organizational leadership for non-profits are among the most popular minors on campus.
