University of Florida - IFAS Annual Report 2007 - (Page 4) IFAS Annual Report 2007 enhancing Cattle production IFAS has aided cattle ranchers by refining phosphorous requirements for bahiagrass pastures in Florida, which account for about 70 percent of all of the state’s grazed improved forage. Researchers are working on relationships between cow temperament and productivity. Extension is also helping ranchers control dog weed and invasive plants. Supplementation strategies and grazing management techniques have improved production for young cows. Educational materials on these topics have also been created. Citrus Greening Gets top priority Citrus canker continues to be a worrisome disease for Florida’s $9.3 billion citrus industry, but citrus greening is now a more serious threat, and it’s the top citrus research and extension priority for UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. In addition to ongoing IFAS research and education programs to manage citrus canker, new and expanded efforts are being initiated to control greening – thanks to support from the Florida citrus industry, the state legislature and federal funding. The citrus greening problem is being attacked on several fronts: by improving diagnostic methods to identify the bacterial disease sooner, developing best management practices for the disease, testing new pesticides and application strategies for existing pesticides, releasing natural predators and parasitoids to control the tiny Asian citrus psyllid insect that spreads the disease, and developing transgenic citrus varieties that resist the pest and greening.
