University of Florida - IFAS Annual Report 2007 - (Page 8) IFAS Annual Report 2007 Toward a Sustainable Florida At a time when managing Florida’s breakneck urban growth is one of the biggest challenges facing the state, IFAS Extension agents are helping educate residents about growth management and urban environmental sustainability. Extension is working with local government agencies, community organizations and corporate institutions to improve environmental, economic and social sustainability in the daily lives of individuals at home, work and play. In St. Lucie County, for example, Extension agents are developing educational programs for sustainable growth management practices on the Treasure Coast, while agents in Pinellas County are developing outreach programs for urban environmental sustainability in the Tampa Bay area. Bottom line: Sustainability is a process that can lead to conservation of natural resources, increased economic prosperity and better lives today and in the future. It can be as simple as reducing the use of fertilizer to protect groundwater or as bold as redesigning cities. 4-H Annual Snapshot UF/IFAS 4-H programs provide opportunities for youth to be safe, secure, respected, intellectually stimulated and engaged in their community. 4-H uses research-based educational opportunities to help youth become competent, caring, confident, connected and contributing citizens of character.
