By PaUl HeNNeSSy T raining as a sales associate at Jordan Marsh to help pay his tuition bills, Aaron Battista ’88 would have needed a huge leap of faith to imagine himself as a retail impresario coordinating high fashion store openings involving celebrities, art, and architecture in major U.S. and overseas cities. As vice president of retail for 7 for all Mankind, LLC (7FAM for short), a booming producer of luxury denim, Battista is heading the development of a new retail division planning to open 100 stores in the next five years. Based in Los Angeles, Sevens, as it’s known in fashion circles, is an eight-year-old company that opened its first New York City store in the SoHo neighborhood in August ’08, as part of a plan to open nine new stores this year, followed by 20 more in 2009. Locations will be nationwide—including L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, Honolulu, Miami, Las Vegas, and New York, among others—and international, with a store already opened in Hong Kong. The openings resemble theatrical productions based on a formula Battista describes using the acronym “FACE”—fashion, art, celebrity, and entertainment—intended to signal a new environment for shopping. The jeans, priced from $160 to $300, are also sold at specialty stores such as Neiman Marcus, Barneys, Bloomingdale‘s, and Nordstrom. The 3,000-square-foot SoHo store is 7FAM’s fourth and largest full-price location, joining stores in L.A., Malibu, and Dallas. Quoted in the August 7 edition of Women’s Wear Daily, Battista said the SoHo store’s design, with gallery space featuring a rotation of art exhibits, and its Broadway 10 n UMass Boston
