UNeWS UNEWS UNEWS UNEWS UNEWS UNEWS Campus Renewal Plans Progress Plans for the redevelopment of the UMass Boston campus recently moved from concept to first-phase implementation with the announcement of new funding for facility development and the selection of an architect for a new academic building, the university’s first in some 35 years. The state’s recently passed Higher Education Bond Bill included $125 million for UMass Boston: $100 million for an “integrated sciences complex” providing multidisciplinary lab and research space; the remainder for stabilizing the exising campus substructure. The Boston architectural firm Goody Clancy will undertake a programming study and preliminary design for the new building, to be located in the area of the current North Parking Lot. “This is great news for both our students and our faculty,” says Ellen O’Connor, vice chancellor for administration and finance. “In just a few years we will have a new science center that will be second to none, providing the facilities and environment to enhance learning and advance research. It’s good to see our planning begin to take shape. Next up, according to the university’s 25-year master plan, is a second new facility, a general-purpose academic building. Twenty-seven UMass Boston undergraduates made oral and poster presentations during this year’s Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, held at UMass Amherst. More than 400 students from 28 public institutions of higher education in Massachusetts took part. The conference is an opportunity for students to present academic work and experiences in a formal setting, to receive feedback from scholars in their fields, and to make connections with fellow students and across disciplines.
