Abdelnour (UMB, Ba art ’89) has been working at an after-school program in Newton, Mass., for fourteen years. She teaches art to elementary school children. Lisa Beatman (UMB, Ba Hum Svc ’85) manages the adult literacy programs at the Harriet tubman House in the South end. She earned an MPa from the Kennedy School of Government in 1990. She recently published her second book, Manufacturing America: Poems from the Factory Floor. the collection moves through the “life cycle” of manufacturing, from its roots in lowell, Mass., textile mills, through downsizing, to the “artist lofts” mined from the old buildings as manufacturing moves overseas. Paul A. Beecy (UMB, BS Fin ’87) was promoted to partner-incharge of the transaction advisory Services–tax Group in Grant thornton llP’s Boston office. Stephen Bryant (UMB, Ba econ ’80) was elected chairman of the Northeast Gas association at the annual meeting of the association, held in New york City on December 13, 2007. His tenure began on January 1, 2008. Bryant became president of Bay State Gas/Northern Utilities in 2003. Prior to that, he served with the company as vice president for external affairs. Scott R. Bryer (UMB, BS Mgt ’87) has lived in Northwood, N.H., since 1995 with his wife, Cindy, and their daughter, taylor. He has been a selectman since 1999 and works as an administrator with the state department of safety and as a certified public accountant. in 2005, he was a part of a team involved with the successful reevaluation of all property values. Erica Bobone ferencik (UMB, Ba art ’82) published her first book, a comic novel about real estate called Cracks in the Foundation, with Waking Dream Press in august 2008. Joshua frank (UMB, Ma am Civ ’88), vice principal at the Pierce School, a K-8 school in Brookline, has been hired as principal of the Wellesley Middle School. He has taught social studies, ancient history, and U.S. history. Donna J. Gagnon (UMB, Med Cslr trng ’86) was among the first in the nation to become a care manager certified through the National academy of Certified Care Managers. She has written a grant which funded an adult day care center in Boston through the older americans act and developed an outreach program for inner-city elders through a partnership with the mental health community and the Salvation army. Susan S. Leeds (UMB, Med ’89) was selected as the 2008 american Star teacher for the State of Florida. one teacher from each state is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for effectiveness in raising student achievement. Susan leeds is a science teacher at Howard Middle School. She is a fan of “inquiry-based learning,” has done projects on the physics of music, and has given students a chance to delve into science with Howard’s rocket club. Nicholas C. McGowan (UMB, Ba th arts ’81) graduated with honors in April 2007 with a Juris Doctor degree from Florida A&M University. He passed the Florida Bar Exam in July 2007 and is now a licensed attorney in the state of Florida. Ellymay o’Toole (UMB, Ba Phys ’88) teaches science at Brighton High School and leads the school’s robotics team, called the Burning tigers. She and her students appealed for funding so that Brighton High could be a part of the Boston FirSt regional robotics Competition. Her eager students were given the initial $10,000 to begin the program, gaining sponsorship by the Smith Family Foundation. the team is now 70 members strong and has combined with another Course to College, a college preparatory high school across the street. Lisa J. Nash Shea (UMB, BS Comp Sci ’85) joined resolve as director of professional services. She is responsible for all services delivered to real estate organizations during the implementation and ongoing use of resolve’s solutions. She joins resolve with over twenty years of experience in the software industry. novels look at the effects of addiction and abuse and the price of fame, even as they stroke the senses with sweet and sensual romance. Lois hamill (MA Hist ’97) was assistant archivist at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, for six years. She completed her MS in library and information science at Simmons College in 2005. In October 2007 she started work as the university archivist at Northern Kentucky University. J. Christina hodgson (MS Bio ’98) worked as a field biologist during grad school and until the end of 2000. Since then she has been publishing the newspaper she founded for the western half of Canyon County in her home state of idaho. The Western Canyon Chronicle provides weekly news coverage of four farm towns plus the surrounding unincorporated county. Edith J. Jacobs (MS Hum Svc ’93) was a 2007 recipient of the Commonwealth Citation for outstanding Performance, as well as the Manuel Carballo Governor’s award for excellence in Public Service, which is the Commonwealth’s highest honor for Executive Department employees. Paul Martineau (Ba art ’98), a member of the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum, is currently working on an exhibition of photographs by Paul outerbridge Jr., scheduled to open in 2009. JoAnne L. Preiser (Ma eng ’91) has published her first chapbook of poems, Confirmation. it can now be ordered through the publisher’s web page, www. finishinglinepress.com. the chapbook is being printed as a limited edition. 1990s Joseph f. Baeta (Ma appl ling ’99) has been appointed principal of Holbrook Junior/Senior High School. Martin E. Baker (MS Hum Svc ’97) now works at UMass Medical School in Worcester as a senior program development associate. Janet L. Bornstein (BS Nur ’95) is a former musician, singer, and band manager who now works as a nurse. She has recently published Deuces Are Wild, part if her Song Trilogy, a series of romance/rock & roll novels. the Maurene Mathers (BSC, BS Mgt ’82) retired from the federal government in October 2007 after 35 years of service.
