UMass Boston Alumni Magazine - Fall/Winter 2008-2009 - (Page 26) investing in UMass Boston $8.2 Million Grant Supports Massachusetts Ocean Management t’s time to bring our best science, policies, and talent forward to protect our maritime economy, cultural traditions, and marine ecosystems,” says Robbin Peach, a founder of the Massachusetts Ocean Partnership (MOP) and a senior fellow at UMass Boston’s McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. Housed in the McCormack School, MOP is an innovative public-private partnership created to advance integrated multi-use ocean management planning in Massachusetts. When Governor Patrick signed the “Oceans Act” in May 2008, Massachusetts become the first state in the nation to launch a planning process for the comprehensive management of its coastal ocean. A philanthropic alliance between the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and MOP will support the effort. With an $8.2 million grant from the foundation, and UMass Boston as fiscal sponsor and partner, MOP will help the Commonwealth design a pioneering plan to balance the many, sometimes competing, uses—such as fishing, shipping, offshore energy projects, and recreation—of the 1.6 million acres within “I three miles of its shoreline. The goal is to protect and enhance the marine environment and traditions that drive the state’s $117 billion coastal economy. The Moore Foundation’s grant requires MOP to raise $2.5 million in matching funds. The University of Massachusetts Foundation has already responded with a $1 million endowment to further the work, and UMass Boston and MOP are actively seeking other financial partners. Rachel Strader, program officer for the foundation, says, “we supported and collaborated with the Massachusetts Ocean Partnership (MOP) because of their ability to work with the whole array of stakeholders who should be engaged in comprehensive Area-Based Management (ABM). MOP is collaboratively developing a strategic plan with these stakeholders and is positioned to work with the state to translate ABM from theory to practice and help make Massachusetts a model of resource management that keeps oceans productive and resilient for years to come.” 26 n UMass Boston
