UMass Boston Alumni Magazine - Fall/Winter 2008-2009 - (Page 27) Why I Chose UMass Boston By iaN MeNZieS hy, I was asked, had I decided to take out a charitable gift annuity in favor of UMass Boston? The question came from assistant vice chancellor Carolyn Flynn, of the university’s office of planned giving. I could well have credited Carolyn’s charm and professionalism, but she wanted a serious answer. I admitted I could have gone one of several ways, but over my 37 years as reporter, writer, columnist, and executive of the Boston Globe I had had a sort of symbiotic relationship with UMass, beginning in the 1950s with a series in the Globe that led to autonomy from the legislature for UMass Amherst. There followed columns urging a Boston campus while taking to task the opposing self-interest of Greater Boston’s private schools. And it so happened that when retirement came, Professor Edmund Beard, who found funding to establish the John W. McCormack Institute of Public Affairs in 1983, offered me a senior fellowship which I happily accepted and enjoyed for ten years. By this time I had reached an age where buying green bananas becomes a risky investment, my family affairs were in order, and I found a charitable gift annuity could also provide help for a needy friend—a “two-fer.” So I could help a friend and give a contribution to a school I had supported in birth and in growth to what it is today: a dynamic public institution serving the young and not-so-young of Greater Boston. That is a good feeling. W UMass Boston gave ian Menzies (r) much-valued opporunites to explore the economic, social, and political issues he so enjoyed. Here he stands with a friend, the late representative Joe Moakley. Giving Highlights During its robust first year, the Chancellor’s Council attracted 199 members. Chaired by arthur Mabbett ’69, the council forms the cornerstone of UMass Boston’s private support. Says Mabbett: “i deeply believe that the Council’s leadership gifts are a catalyst for UMass Boston to effect important social and cultural change.” to learn more, contact UMass Boston Fund Director Kelly Westerhouse at 617.287.5342 or Kelly.Westerhouse@umb.edu. the Urban Scholars Program perfectly fulfills the Eastern Bank Charitable foundation’s commitment to the health and vitality of the communities it serves, says foundation executive director laura Kurzrok. the foundation made a first-time grant of $15,000 to the UMass Boston program, which gives young people from South Boston and Dorchester the skills to succeed in college. Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009, Urban Scholars has served more than 1,400 students. The new Center for Clinical Education and Research “represents the achievement of bold vision, collaboration, and philanthropic investment,” said Chancellor Motley at the center’s grand opening. Paul and Margaret Chisholm’s gift of $25,000 honored Margaret’s parents, Robert and Regina Healey, and conveyed admiration for her sister, center director Judith Healey Walsh. The Chisholms (on the left in the photo, with Healey Walsh) named the Exam Room for Eliza Mahoney, a Boston native and the first African American to work as a professionally trained nurse.
