UMass Boston is the first university to join a City of Boston program that encourages both local business development and charitable giving. the university will promote the Boston Community Change charge card among students, faculty, staff, and alumni. in turn, cardholders can direct donations to the university. learn more at www. bostoncommunitychange.org. the newest graduate offering of the College of Management, launched this fall, leads to the MS in finance. it’s a ten- to fifteencourse program providing in-depth education in corporate finance and investment management for students interested in careers in finance and accounting. learn more at www.management.umb.edu. Continued Growth in Research Awards and Private Giving Fiscal 2008 was a record-breaker on two fronts: grant and sponsored program awards reached $45.4 million, nearly 9 percent above the previous year; while giving from private sources soared over 41 percent to $16.8 million. These numbers fit a pattern of consistent growth (see the charts above). Among the major grants were $8.2 million from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for improving the integration of natural and social science with ocean management; $7.7 million from the National Institutes of Health for addressing health and healthcare disparities through an exploratory center dedicated to community-based participatory research; and $2.6 million from the National Science Foundation to continue leading the work of the Boston Science Partnership, which works to raise student science achievement in the Boston public schools. The year also saw the establishment of the Founders Circle and the Chancellor’s Council, respectively honoring cumulative philanthropy of $100,000 or more and annual giving at the $1,000-plus level.
