Guided by extensive discussions with students, faculty and staff, state and city officials, and residents of neighboring communities, the planners focused first on a strategic plan—titled UMass Boston Renewal: Building the Student-Centered, Urban Public University of the New Century—for all aspects of UMass Boston’s growth over the next 25 years as an institution dedicated to teaching, research, and service. Then, with the aid of architectural consultants Chan Krieger Sieniewicz, they turned to a master plan for the physical campus that will help the university realize its ambitious goals by meeting needs for new academic buildings, green open space, housing for 1,000 students, and better integration with the waterfront and surrounding neighborhood. The transformed campus “will change the whole culture. It will create a much more open and vibrant community,” said Chancellor Motley. Motley’s announcement drew favorable editorials from the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, and friendly comments from public officials including Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. A combination of state and university funds will support the construction, and a major fundraising campaign is in the works. O n umass boston
