About Alumni About AlumNi Diane McBrine santos (SCB, BS Elem Ed ’63) is currently the principal of the Allen Avenue School, a K-4 elementary school in North Attleborough, Mass. This is her 42nd year as an educator in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Mary Timmins (BSC, BS Elem Ed ’68) retired earlier this year from the Wilmington School Department after 38 years as an elementary school teacher. About Alumni About Alumni About Alumni 1940s Hinda Lampke elwyn (TCB, BS Ed ’41) enjoys living in beautiful Sarasota. Everything that a large city offers is there—theater, symphony, opera, ballet, and arts of all kinds. Both of her children are early retirees and spend several months of the winter in Sarasota with her. Pauline Brooks Peck (TCB, BS Ed ’47) is still writing children’s poetry for The Weekly Reader, a weekly educational classroom magazine designed for children in grades pre-K through 6. To her surprise, her antiques book Mustache Cups, Timeless Victorian Treasures, originally published in 1999, is still enjoying sales! Pauline is enjoying her “semi” retirement years on Cape Cod, where she zips around in her red Cadillac convertible. 1970s sheila Bennett (UMB, BA Eng ’79; BA Soc ’86) retired from the US Army as a master sergeant (MSG) after thirty years of military service. Clare Burke (BSC, BS Soc ’75) received a Master of Education degree from Lesley University in 2004. Gerry Daley (BSC, MEd ’71) retired from teaching in the Medford schools in 2006 and enjoys taking summer classes at UMass Boston now. Monica Donovan (UMB, BA Bio ’78) works for the Permanente Medical Group, which implemented an electronic health records system over the summer. She and her husband bought an avocado ranch in Santa Barbara, Cal., and hope to retire there one day. 1950s Patricia T. sheehy (STC, BS Elem Ed ’54) taught for five years after graduation and then stayed home to raise her family. She has three sons, three daughters, and seven grandchildren. She returned to teaching “temporarily” and has been substitute-teaching for the last 25 years. Remembering Boston State D ecember 6 saw a particularly festive event in the Campus Center—an evening to celebrate the dedication of the boston State College room. Shown above in the room are boston State alumni, faculty, and staff who joined Chancellor J. Keith motley and umass boston executive staff members and deans for the event. Ninety-four-year-old former boston State and umass boston Leslie Fay Ambrose (SCB, BS Ed ’67) has been happily married to Jim Ambrose for 41 years. They have three children and one grandchild. Leslie manages her son’s medical billing company in Norwood. Helen T. Glynn Harrison (SCB, BS Sec Ed ’63) has been teaching French, Spanish, and ESL for 44 years. She has two sons, both of whom are married, and one granddaughter. n 1960s professor richard Newman ’36 cut the ribbon to the applause of more than 140 guests. the boston State College room, which includes more than 80 photos and items of memorabilia, pays tribute to the college’s rich history, honors those who studied and worked there, and commemorates boston State’s legacy at umass boston, in the city of boston, and beyond. the multi-purpose room will be used for meetings, seminars, conferences, and training and study sessions. it is the first space in the campus’s newest building to showcase university history. “it will always be important for the university of massachusetts boston to remember, value, and build on the traditions and legacy of boston State College,” said Chancellor motley.
