She has two daughters who are currently attending UMass Amherst. Helvi Anneli Johnson (UMB, BA Hum Svc ’85) manages the Quincy Farmer’s Market, and is a pro-bono lecturer/demonstrator for “The Art of Baking.” Ruth Kahn (UMB, BA Hum Svc ’82) is open-captioning at the Wheelock Family Theater for audience members who are deaf or hard of hearing. Joan Powell Kerzner (UMB, MS Pub Aff ’88) moved from Belmont, after 38 years, to Lowell, Mass., where she hopes to be an urban pioneer, living in a converted old mill with her husband, Arnold Kerzner. susan J. Lincourt (UMB, BA Econ ’82) is the senior payroll/ HRIS specialist at the Physicians of Tufts-New England Medical Center. She has been working in human resources for fifteen years and finds her current job to be perfect! She has three children and twelve grandchildren. Jerome F. McDonald (UMB, BA Eng ’82) is the director of student accounting at the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Mass. Jerome’s father is a Boston State College graduate, and his mother and four siblings are all UMass Boston graduates! Ralph M. McGinnis (UMB, BS Mgmt ’82) and his wife Valerie just moved to Colorado after many years in Cincinnati, and are loving it! Burnell McIntyre (UMB, BS Ed ’85) continued her studies at Lesley College and earned her master’s degree in education. She retired in 2000 after spending her whole teaching career in Boston public schools. Ronald Parsons (UMB, BS Nur ’87) recently returned from Baghdad, where he ran two mental health clinics. He says, “Thanks to UMass Boston, I’ve been able to have a great career in the military medical department.” Michael A. Peddell (UMB, BS Crim Jus ’89) recently retired from the Plymouth Police Department after serving more than 23 years. He last held the position of administrative sergeant/training coordinator. Peddell left to form a company, Lawyer’s Edge Defense Services, Inc., that consists exclusively of retired police officers and serves defense counsels as consultants, re-investigators, and auditors of police reports and practices. Peddell is married with three young children and resides in Marshfield, Mass. Paul L. Philben (UMB, BS Mgt ’84) is enjoying the challenges of bringing up his children: Lily, 14, and Paul III, 12. Mark Pickering (UMB, BA Comm Plan ’87) works as a copy editor on the business desk at the Boston Herald. Tony Pinto (UMB, BA Art ’87) recently married Adrienne Grace twice! They were first married by the mayor of Nesso on Lake Como in Italy. A month later, they held their reception in Palm Springs, California, where they surprised their guests by getting married a second time. Kathryn J. salem (UMB, MEd Sp Ed ’85) is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at UMass Lowell. A Winner of the Murrow Award m ichael Coleman ’82 recently received the prestigious edward r. murrow National Award for journalistic excellence from the radio and television News Directors Association. he’s shown above with NbC newscaster and “today” co-host Natalie morales at the association’s annual awards dinner in New York City; he was one of three people to be given a murrow award for work in radio broadcasting. Coleman, who earned his bA at umass boston as an english major, is the director of creative production at WbZAm radio in boston. he was recognized for his writing and production of a feature entitled “Who’s on First,” a take-off on Abbot and Costello’s famous “Who’s on First” baseball comedy routine. Coleman’s spoof, on which he collaborated with WbZ news reporter Carl Stevens, highlighted boston red Sox players during a period of dramatic off-season roster changes. Coleman found his career in radio as a umass boston student, while working at Wumb-Fm. he has been in his present position at WbZ for the last 14 years—and a standup comedian for the last 15. in 1988, he founded ColeCuts, a full-service production house specializing in creative writing for television and radio. his projects have included award-winning ads for such clients as belmont Springs, Cabot Cheese, lincoln park, and WbZ radio. 4 n umass boston
